If somebody asks a question, you know, you should try to answer it. Not just simply give someplatitude of how good or bad a place is. That's just me. I like to actually give advice if I'm presented a question...

Me too. But saying that San Bernardino is a good place to live, is like saying Watts or Compton is a good place to live. You know that just as well as I do. I did inform them about the nicest area there. I think I awnsered it just fine.

Oh, here's a couple objective facts for ya :
San Bernardino has state's 4th highest MURDER rate for cities above 10,000 people.

The Inland Empire has been noted as a capital of methamphetamine production.[50] The Riverside and San Bernardino county sheriffs' departments busted 635 meth labs in 2000; law enforcement has driven most of the meth production industry to Mexico since 2007, but many of the homes discovered to have been used as meth labs before 2006 have since been sold on the market before California law required rigorous decontamination, leading to a legacy of health hazards for unsuspecting renters and home-buyers in the area.[51]

As to why you are moving here: Re-think that strategy. I think you are just nuts for doing so. I want to get out of here as soon as possible. Most of my friends feel the same way. ... by the way, I am not a youngster looking for a career...I am retired. However, I would NEVER introduce teenagers to this area of Southern California--you are looking for huge problems if you do. San Bernardino is filled with gangs. Your kids will be better of NOT moving to Southern California--I hate to say this stuff because I grew up here--and it was nice then.
Other than the poster Fontucky, who is one of my favorites, almost no one seems to like living in the IE. Fontucky just happens to have a good deal with her situation. It doesn't sound like she needs to overextend her finances to enjoy her lifestyle. I admire that!

Most people can't ENJOY living in the IE unless they can spend gobs of money to have fun & explore the paint ball centers, etc....Fun is expensive & the cost of living is hellish. And you have to fight traffic all the time.

Some posters may have extreme feelings against living in the IE, as I do. I think we should all "get along" & keep the animosity between each other that's personal OFF the boards.

If you want to leave Portland, you won't find the easy state funding that OR has. I'd go to Eugene, if I were you (where I am) but there are no jobs PERIOD. It's all dog eat dog competition.

Anyway, the rents here in SE Eugene can be reasonable for apartments if you don't have pets.

Best wishes in your escape,

Kate

I am with Britt, SB is not a good place to live IMO...I remember last year, almost everyday on the front page of the Sun it would talk about somebody getting murdered...It has it's few nice areas but you still have to drive out of those nice areas to get to the grocery store, mall etc.

Honestly, I like the north-end towards the University. I felt that this was one of the few neighborhoods in the IE. Decent schools, VERY low crime, great mountian views, older community with a sense of character, and university to boot. Grocery store within walking distance. It's a nice area. Frankly, it's one of the few true, non-contrived communities within the IE. It's not masterplanned (though some parts are slated for such a development), it organically grew into a nice area of town. Temecula and Murietta feel fake to me. Nice areas, don't get me wrong...technically better than San Bernardino. But they exude this isolated sense of achievement, almost like Santa Clarita. You move to T/M to escape. Northern Moreno Valley, when I was growing up, was the "Temecula" of that era. People moved to Sunnymead Ranch and Hidden Springs to be close enough to a freeway, but far away from percieved ills.

Northern San Bernardino and Redlands, don't have that feeling. Neither does Upland. That's just my general feeling.

The point is, San Bernardino is NOT a good place to live. It IS ghetto. There may be one or two nice little areas, but logically a person/family can not stay secluded in that one little area the entire time they live there. They have to actually leave their house. It's not worth even thinking about. I think anyone logic will agree. I dont care how "fake" Murrieta/Temecula feel, at least they are SAFE, and you can live in peace.

No, it's not the point. A nice area, is not a ghetto. Hence a nice "area or two" is not a ghetto. There are parts of town that are "ghetto", but not everywhere. Why are you getting up in arms? There are safe areas of San Bernardino. If an area contains the amentities needed, then you LOGICALLY you need not travel so often outside of said areas.

Also, you can save a lot more money and attend good schools in Northern San Bernardino. It's not the end of the world...

I kinda take back my best wishes post above... The poster only posted for ONE day... 05/07/09.

I don't exactly take it back. Just wish I'd noted that the post was old & the poster hasn't been back. It's 4 months later & no sign of the girl goin' south...

Fontucky is a he. A big, hulking, hairy, bearded, flatulent he.
