what a sad thing, this shows what has happened to So California. I remember when Victorville was a place many wanted to live just to escape the city life. It was a lower cost of living, quiet, filled with nice people and close enouth to the city life that in a few hours one could be in the middle of everything. About the only negative was the weather. This was true about Desert Hot Springs as well. It was the poor mans Palm Springs. Lot of retired couples, nice mobile home parks and again, friendly people.

I'd have to say Hemet would be the only place for the poster and even then it would be hard. Real Estate Taxes could kill them.

I am not retired, but I live on just less than that. My 2 kids and I get by fine. We are renting now while I save up the last few thousand I need for a down payment for a home. Here in Menifee a nice house can be rented for under $1300 if you don't try to move in right as people are competeing near the schools for a summer move-in. It helps also to be semi-flexible as to amenities, neighborhood, etc.

Sorry in advance for this unrequested advice: We are super-conservative with all utilities (for the sake of the environment and cost) and have no cable or TV at all. Our main indulgences are fast internet ($40/month) with individual laptops and 1 redbox movie per weekend. We don't eat out, just have high quality homemade stuff. I cook ahead for a few days at a time in batches, using the best items from the grocery ads that week. Winco is great for staple foods at low prices. We only use my little car when needed, this town is great for biking to most things. The library is perfect, no need to buy books. We don't belong to a gym but instead play games, walk around the lakes, enjoy biking and going to friends for swimming.

You get the idea. Life can be full, rich and comfortable on less than most people think. Especially when living in the right place near people that you enjoy.
