What about Spring Valley Lake??? I have heard good things about that area??? What are your thoughts?

SVL much better option then Big Bear. Just learn the back way to Barstow to avoid Bear Valley Rd to 15 fwy.....because it sucks...that alone will take you an hour to get home every day. Try the back way out of Victorville off D St through Ore Grande. There might even be other area's as well.

Just throwing this out there - what about Wrightwood? I know it's an hour from Barstow, but the road is much better than getting up to Big Bear. You would still be in some trees and decent altitude (cooler!).

Live in Big Bear as in the mountains, I say not, everyday you'd have to make a commute down the highways and then back up. One day on a stormy day the highway you might use to get home might be closed b/c of snow. then you need to use a alternative route. If your new it would take time to get used to the area and find Alternative routes later on.
