Default Need Info on San Bernardino, CA

I'm low income. I found 2 small houses in San Bernardino that were $550.00/month and the other was $600.00/month.
Which is great!!! I want a small house or cottage type of place.
But there must be a catch...Why so cheap? Is it a safe place?
Please, anything you can tell me would really be appreciated.
I live 2000 miles away, now.

I hate to tell you this, but at that price, it is has to be a bad area. Do you have street names where the houses are located? I loved in San Berdo for 10 years (1993-2003) and lived towards the north end. Anything above 30th ave would be okay, anything above Kendall Ave. would be even better. Marshall elem. is a good school, but the high schools are not that great. Cajon HS is the best. The smog is bad. It settles right up against the mountains. We live about 2 miles away from the mountains and sometimes couldn't even see them! It is sad, because it could be a beautiful city.

It is cheap because of the area. The gangs moved from LA to San Berdo. Now they are moving up into the high desert (where I live). There are nice pockets, you just have to look for them. The more north of the city you go, the better.

Why are you moving to CA? I can help direct you to areas that are good.

SB (city) is a hole. It has a higher murder rate than Compton (famous for "south central LA gangland killings"). Stay away...as far away as you can....

It's inexpensive because there isn't a lot of development going on there--in fact, inside the city proper, there isn't any. I teach at a public school in San Berdo city, and the school is in a really lovely older neighborhood. The houses are charming and there are a lot of older trees, which appeals to me. It's probably one of the best places for real estate deals in So Cal. There is gang activity in San Berdo, but I think you'd be able to tell by driving around the neighborhood. Do be careful of that. I really love the community where I teach, I can tell you that much.

I need a CA residence to get surgery funded through Medi Cal.
To qualify, you must be quite poor.
I can afford $600.00/month rent maximum.

I am convinced the perfect small house EXISTS, for me, SOMEWHERE in California!

How to find it?

I'd appreciate any other ideas/advise.
I won't actually be ready to move till July. I'm trying to scope out places in advance. Especially since I live 2000 miles away, and driving through, etc won't be an option.

I found both those small houses (for $550.00/mo and $600.00/mo rent) on one of those Rent.com type of websites.
Since were both in San Bernardino, I thought it might be worth educating myself on the city.

Thanks especially for the street names/numbers/areas, etc!

(Maybe I should try Iraq. Maybe I could AFFORD RENT rent there... and no Crips/Bloods/Latin Kings.... If you don't mind a few incendiary devices/bomb(ers)
(Just kidding)!

Ok Fuzzie, I know it' not San Bernardino county, but you may want to consider renting someone's guest house in the Coachella Valley. Pretty much everyone has a guest house and a lot of folks rent them out. You would have your own private space at a rent that is probably affordable. San Bernardino is only about a 45 minute drive down the 10 freeway from the Coachella Valley if you need to be in San Berdoo. Hope this helps. Good luck with your search.

Thanks.
Do you have any ideas on where to find them, on the net? Or which newspapers might have info (etc)?

You can check out the newspaper for the Coachella Valley. It is the Desert Sun. You can also do a search of places through Desert Area MLS.
