Job in Redlands - Where to Live?
We're thinking about taking a job in Redlands, and have never been there before, so any advice you can offer is much appreciated.
Typical family, husband, wife, 2 kids and a dog. Can afford up to 3k for rent or mortgage. Kids are active in sports and school. Safety is by far the most important consideration for us, gated communities are a plus. Quality of life is the next biggest consideration (IE access to shopping, theatres, etc.)
I don't mind commuting up to 45 minutes from Redlands if necessary.
Does anyone out there have any suggestions? What is an absolute 'no-no'?
Thanks!

Redlands itself, Yucaipa, maybe Baumont. Stay out of San Bernardino and anything west along the 10 Frw. Rancho Cucamonga would work to.
I don't think gates are needed in the cities I listed. I'm in Yucaipa and the worst thing thats happened in our nieghborhood is a few of the mail boxes on our street got ran down one graduation night.

Redlands itself is a nice city in which to live. There are beautiful neighborhoods of older homes, and also newer ones. The downtown area has some great restaurants and shops. They have a great downtown event during the week one evening, too.
I know several people who commute to my place of employment in Riverside from an area near Redlands called East Highlands Ranch. It's a master-planned community and there may be a gated one in there.
I don't really know, but you can find out easily with some searches. The people of which I'm speaking are executives, and I have heard their homes are beautiful and large. The community has been there for years and has a good reputation.
Steer clear (as someone else said) of the areas west of Redlands until you get to Rancho Cucamonga.

Yucaipa appears to have a low crime rate:
Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed
Rancho Cucamonga numbers are also solid:
Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed
Redlands has a higher crime rate, but aside from auto thefts, is under the national average in all other categories---though not by a lot: Moderator cut: linking to competitors sites is not allowed
I have to echo the other person's remark about San Bernadino. It is a gang infested sewer. Crime is 50% above the national average.

Redlands is actually a very nice mid sized city. It has a nice history and a safe down town area, a wonderful University. They have a nice market night on Thursdays and many small shops and resturaunts. There are beautiful old homes and also nice newer communities; one that comes to mind is Orchard Park by Centex- I believe they are sold out but there are some resales in the area. Redlands School District also has a very good reputation.
Rancho Cucamonga is a nice area, great schools; Etiwanda School district k-8, and then Chaffey High School district. It has great shopping, Victoria Gardens. However it is expensive, very keeping up with the Jones and congested.
If you will be working in Redlands I wld take advantage of not having to do a long commute, which in so cal is unusual, and look in Redlands itself.
If you prefer a bit more rural setting I wld suggest Yucaipa. It is just past Redlands, housing is cheaper. There are a few great areas; Hidden Meadows, Whisper Ranch, and CHapman Heights come to mind. The schools are decent. Redlands is literally around 5 -10 minutes away depending on where in town you are coming from. You can also purchase a house with some land if you are into that type of thing.
I wld avoid any town inbetween Rancho Cucamoga and Redlands however, if you visit drive the 10 and you will get an idea of why(Fontana, Rialto, Colton, San Bernardino) .

I would beg to differ on Colton, Grand Terrace, and Loma Linda. There is a wonderful piece of Colton in the Reche Canyon area. Loma Linda is equally safe and hospitable south of the 10 into the hills separating it from Riverside/Moreno Valley. Grand Terrace is also a pleasant place, again, south of the 10. These are all towns west of Redlands, and while they are not whole towns of fantastic repute (I'ld love to find one that is), some neighborhoods are still very safe and still very nice (north of the 10/west of University in Redlands you can find some unpleasant neighborhoods in any of the three towns mentioned). The Reche Canyon section is still wild - there are burros that still live free. And there is a huge tract along San Timoteo that is being built up. The southern end of Redlands has similar housing going up. Barton and Mission in Loma Linda all have housing going in.
At the same time, persons may argue Beaumont and Yucaipa are not all that nice. Some places are not too kind to persons of non-majority races. In any of the towns mentioned, I sitll think you have to pick and choose. I don't think it is as clear cut as described. San Berdoo around University and north into Devore is fairly decent as well. And while those areas are in San Berdoo, I am fairly certain the schools are safe.
I agree however with Rialto, Fontana, and Ontario. You're better off not moving to any part of those communities, but I don't know them as well as those listed previously. I think you may find pockets of safety, but then you are living in an enclosed community, and your kids are not safe in the neighborhoods or schools. Good luck in finding a place, Northerner.

redlands.ca has the most satan worshippers in the usa.they are in the police dept, local govt,etc... stay away from east redlands.redlands downtown area is very nice & the parks are clean & nice.the summers in redlands are very hot & dry.redlands has alot of victorian style homes dating back to 1900.my fav is kimberlycrest.they have tours of the house avail for 7.00 but you cant go on the 3rd floor.checkout kimberlycrest.org.prospect park is next door & its believed to be haunted cause many yrs ago a teen girl was murdered in the park.overall redlands is a nice, safe city but dont let them creepy lame smelly satan worshippers get ahold of you.

This message nearly brought tears to my eyes....because I love REDLANDS SO MUCH. Not many people know about Redlands...but this is in my opinion, one of the best places to live in Southern CA. that's quiet and family oriented and beautiful. I moved from Redlands to Las Vegas (yeah Las Vegas, and I don't smoke crack...but it's a long story) and how I miss beautiful Redlands. I fell in love with Redlands twenty years ago (40 now) and it is STILL as wonderful today as now. I moved from there four years ago. All right, enough of that...just about anywhere in Redlands is good...especially neighborhoods on the Southside and Southwest of downtown, streets like Cajon, Center, neighborhoods South of downtown...I would agree that, unless you like the rural areas East Redlands (rather new) is not all that EXCEPT they have that great high school, which my son went to when it first opened. As far as SATAN Worshippers..ROTF..that person is a loon so pay no attention to LOONS. That is some old urban myth. Let me say this too, with all due respect, Loma Linda IS very nice, and Grand Terrace as well (mostly old folks) BUT STAY THE HELL OUT OF COLTON! I can't believe anyone in their right mind would even whisper COLTON in the same breath as Redlands or Loma Linda. Colton is riddled with GANGS,, it's a horrid place to be with children. Stay out of Fontana, Rialto, and San Bernardino too and I'm one of those person Kin in the above post was speaking of as to people who would argue that Yucaipa is NOT all that nice. I worked there at one time. There are a few of the newer sections that are ok but overall...no. Anyway Redlands will be a great place for you and Family. There are great schools a really nice movie theatre, you're twenty minutes from Ontario Mills Mall and tons of shopping there, another 45 minutes east is Palms Springs which is very nice and three hours from Las Vegas....a nice place to....V-I-S-I-T! (iF YOU GET MY DRIFT) :-)

If I were to move back to So-Cal I would only move back to my hometown of Redlands. Its been 5+years since I moved so I don't know what its like anymore, My dad is still in the area and says they are really building it up out there.
But when I lived there it was nice place to live. We also lived in East Highlands Ranch, and my mom is in Upland. All pretty good places to live IMHO.
Im staying in Wyoming now...cause I dont like the heat, crime, smog, cost of living...or any of that stuff. LOL
