My current job is offering me a position in Palm Springs California. I am from New Mexico and so this would be a pretty big change for me. Apart from getting used to the heat any other things I should be aware of? I am single 25 years old, and would appreciate any type of advice.

I'm not sure you are into night life, but things are pretty laid back. Businesses mostly cater to the traveler that is seeking the golf/spa luxury vacation, the older wealthy crowd or the gay community. I can tolerate heat, so Palm Springs is an oasis to me. Palm Springs is fast becoming a year round community, but there is still a noticeable difference in traffic and wait times in the summer months. Palm Springs is known for it's 50-60's Mid-Century Modern architecture , and the whole Rat-Pack history, which is pretty popular with the art community right now. Many of the old modern homes are bought by the LA crowd and remodeled at phenomenal prices. The economy seems pretty good, but it does seem like there isn't much of a middle-class here. I have noticed the condo prices have gone down a bit, and the rental prices on Craigslist is high, forget housing unless you have 400K plus .
The shopping in the area is high-end mostly, with your usual chain stores too. The local casinos are nice, and stay pretty busy on the weekends, especially Casino Morongo. If you are more into a rural quiet area, the Higher Desert ( Morongo, Yucca Valley) is cheaper to live and 30-45 minute commute to Palm Springs. I hope that helps, good luck ![]() |

I believe my sister-in-law who lives in Michigan was recently in your same position, dinmoren. After she did the math she realized that, although she would be making more money at the job in Palm Springs than she was in Michigan, it wouldn't work out for her because the higher cost of living in California vs. Michigan.
We drove out to see her when she visited Palm Springs and I hadn't been there in years. I was really suprised to see how things had grown so much out there. ![]() Sorry, I really have nothing to add to your question other than what Screenial posted. But best of luck on whatever decision you decide on! |
