I am relocating to San Diego in late June and wanted to know the criteria for renting an apartment. I have owned a home in Houston, Texas; but my credit is flawed; but I have good rental history on my home. I have secured a good job in San Diego.

What do they look for when renting? and what other options do I have. Are they laxed on credit issues?

A lot of places ask for credit checks, but unless your credit is *really* bad, if you don't have evictions on it you're probably fine. I know a few people who were terrified of having to get credit checks and ended up having no problem. It can make a difference if you're trying to rent from an individual or a property management company, too.. Might not hurt to get a letter of recommendation from your current landlord or past landlords if possible.

Good luck!

Thanks for the information. Actually I have owned a home for 12 years in Houston with current payments. I just had some spotty credit in the past which I have kept current for the past 2 years. I am thinking of either moving to Escondido or Mira Mesa or Rancho Pasquitos. Which would you recommend for someone who is in their early 50's? So I should not have any problems with renting an apartment?

A lot of places require you make 2 to 3 times the rent per month. If you can do that, you should be fine!

Where will you be working? That might help you decide where you want to look for housing.

I will be working in Carmel Valley. I don't mind moving inland. What are your thoughts of either Mira Mesa or Escondido?

Forget Escondido. You don't need to drive that far.

What's your rental budget?

I don't know much about Escondido, but your commute won't be fun heading south on the 15 in the a.m. Mira Mesa would be closer to Carmel Valley, especially if you live closer to the 5/805 freeways. I prefer the west part of Mira Mesa and there are a ton of rentals there. Plenty of restaurants and shopping too! Rancho penasquitos wouldn't be too bad of a commute either. I'd live there. Definitely check them out!

My rental budget is up to 1500 for a two bedroom apartment. What is wrong with Escondidto? Isnt it more affordable?

You can get an apartment for that much in Mira Mesa. Escondido to CV is 30-40 minutes one way.

As already stated, Escondido is just too long of a commute. You can rent a 2bd place right in Carmel Valley for $1500:
2 Bed/2Bath Upgraded Condo, Perfect Location at Carmel Pointe (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/apa/1804351344.html - broken link)

Don't be too picky on your first rental. Once you live here for a while, you will find a better place to live that meets your personality and lifestyle.
