Hi all,

We've been renting in the Banker's Hill area and are looking to buy
a place in Mission Hills. We were looking at the local elementary schools
and noticed that the API scores of the highly rated Grant Elementary
have been steadily improving over the last decade,
from around 800 in 2001 to 915 now. At the same time, the school
lost its "magnet" status in 2008-09.

Can anyone comment on whether the API increase is related to the magnet status? Or were there other factors contributing to the increase?

Thanks in advance!

-Ranjit.

API increase due to local neighborhood families returning to this public school over private options.
They returned in part b/c Grant is now a K-8 school. So, also no longer called Grant Elementary but now Grant.

Hi Bloom --

thanks for the response!

Do you know of any other factors. For example, did the private
options diminish or become more expensive? Was there an influx
of families wanting public school education?

Thanks a bunch!

-Ranjit.

Another factor could be that all schools have been increasing their APIs over time. They have to or face dire consequences. That 800 that Grant had a decade ago was probably much better than it sounds by today's standards. If it has 915 by today's standards, that is a very good score.

Private options are expensive.
