There is really no robotics industry per se. SD has government defense subcontractors (Raytheon, General Dynamics, Scimytar, SAIC), biotech / biomed (Neurocrine,Senomyx, BD, Eli Lily), RF / Wireless (Qualcomm, Broadcom, Nokia), and some scattered tech / software (Intuit, Sony). There is some Finance too (First American, LPL, College Loan Corp).

Ther are a lot of small / startup R&D firms catering to the services in these industries or working on novel technology throughout San Diego.

Tech has had some hard times in the past and it is not an easy industry to be in. Lots of competition from India these days and layoff and company meltdowns are not uncommon. The market is hot today but that could all be history tomorrow... that's just how the tech business cycle is.
