What is the best/safest area for a single 50ish year old woman moving to the San Diego area? I work in biotech/science research so would want to be somewhat close to those companies but don't mind a bit of a drive if it saves me money in rental and I get a nice place in a nice area. I am hoping to spend in the vicinity of $1500 a month - would LOVE to buy a house but selling my house in MD is likely to leave me little for that! - for a rental preferably at least a 2 br. Thanks for any and all suggestions/input.

The primary biotech area in SD is Sorrento Valley...so apartments in UTC (University Towne Center), Del Mar, Carmel Valley, Solana Beach, Cardiff, Encinitas would all be relatively close and safe. North County is generally a very safe area to live.

This apt is in a nice area of La Jolla: La Jollan Townhomes - 1050 est. sq. feet (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/apa/2033947132.html - broken link)

You'd be 15-20 minutes from most biotech employers.
