I'm moving for my company, we are openning a new location in Kearney Mesa. I have never been to San Diego, but really couldn't pass up the chance to have my company relocate me from Maryland.
I do currently have a realitor, but have no idea of where to look to find a place to purchase. Obviously she will give me her advice, but sometimes that can be bias. I'm really into running and mountaining biking / anything outdoors (golf, surfing), I'd love to be able to get to the beach within a decent amount of time. At the same time I do like to go out to night clubs / bars / nice resturants. Anyone have any good location suggestions for me, I'm really at a lost? Thanks!! |

It really depends on your budget. I'd move to Del Mar or Leucadia (one of those houses on Neptune with their private stairs to the beach) if money was no object. On the other hand, there's always Clairemont, ten minutes by car to the beach and right in the center of San Diego.

I'd rent a place in Clairemont and then decide later where to buy. Clairemont, is middleish class. Halfway between the beach and Kearney Mesa, and central to everything. True it has a post WWII suburban autosprawl feel to it, but it's a good starting point in which to rent. Your other good choice would be Mission Valley. These are both McDonalds type places. Not bad, and not distinctive. A good place to start until you know more about the city.
Now if you do have particular likes and dislikes, other than geography, we could recommend areas that are more particularly suited to you if you provide us with details. |

I'm probably looking for a newer condo to purchase. It looks like Mission Valley has some nice newer buildings. Downtown seems way to expensive when it comes to HOA fees. I like to find something between Kearney Mesa and La Jolla, maybe even a little north of Kearney Mesa. But I guess I really won't know until I fly out later this month to look around.
Thanks for your feedback... |

Between La Jolla and Kearney Mesa would put you in the University City area (also known as the Golden Triangle). That area would be more expensive than Clairemont and Mission Valley. A lot of solid choices for newer condos. Traffic is a bit of a problem. The main surface streets are 6 lanes across, and packed at rush hour. However, it is considered more upscale than Clairemont and Mission Valley. You will of course pay for that.

University City seems to have some nice places, and it seems to be cheaper than downtown. How is Poway and adjacent areas for living?

University City is probably the most desirable of the areas given it's central location and relatively good schools. Poway has the better school district but suffers from some traffic issues and heat in the summer. It all depends on what you are looking for. |

Tierrasanta is nice. My advice is to rent before you buy. You should learn positives and negatives of the area before you take the plunge and buy. Good luck.
