Mexico itself will not recognize any of your United States auto insurance. And if you're in an accident in Mexico, you are assumed to be at fault until proven otherwise. ALWAYS buy Mexican insurance if you drive into Mexico. Even if the policy refuses to pay off, at least you're "legal".

I think people see Mexicali/Calexico as being "in the middle of nowhere", which is probably unfair.

Mexicali's a neat place. I haven't been there in years, though. I should pay a visit next time I'm on my way out to the desert.

Whatever you do don't drive to Tijuana right now, the roads are ridiculously messed up, even for Tijuana standards, I would just go to a better city in Mexico like Monterrey, Guadalajara, or Mexico City, you can catch a cheap flight from the Tijuana airport via airlines like Volaris or Vivaerobus.

Default tips and tricks for Mexico

Ok, let me explain to all of you how people really mislead you on the comments made here about México.

1.- I am a Mexican and yes there are problems with drugs and shootings but I have never seen one and I definietly don't want to see one , I go to Ensenada and TIjuana every weekend and had no problems, and my car has California plates so you guys don't think that I blend in with the car.

2.- Will you be safe parking your car with a lot of good stuff showing off in the city of Watts, Compton, or East LA?, I think it is a matter of common sense, if you don't want something to get stolen don't ever leave it at plain sight.

3.- A lot of the bad stories of Mexico start with "a friend of a friend", now do you know that friend of the friend because if I was you I would ask him directly on what was his story, also many Americans think that they can do whatever they want while in México, "drink while driving, drink on the streets, be loud, take a pee on any corner that they feel like doing, do drugs on the streets or bars", and when they get caught they think that they where doing nothing wrong, then they offer big money to the policeman and if the policeman take the money, next day they will say "the police took my money, I was extortionated by the policeman, they just got me because I am a tourist form USA". think off all your actions before you start blaming others, and yes there are a few corrupt policeman in Mexico but I have seen also a few in USA so there is no difference there.

3.- If you see something strange going on, don't try to be the CNN reporter of the year, just walk away and get out of trouble, mostly all of the Americans will try to film an accident or something going on bad, so they can say that they did it or to get famous on you tube with their masterpiece, and say that that happens all the time in Mexico. I have seen a lot of bad stuff here in USA and you don't see me posting it on you tube, Like I say just walk away and look away.

4.- Some insurance companies will cover your car up to 75 miles from the border in to Mexico, but if you are planing to go over that many miles you can purchase a Mexican Insurance before leaving USA, and believe me a lot of them are Mexican insurances licensed here in USA, so if something happens it will take the same amount of time to collect your payment here or in mexico, also if you forget to buy one and you need one purchase in the USA because you don't trust the Mexican insurance, you can purchase one online.

5.-Don't be a show off with your money and be the "Drinks are on me" buddy. In Mexico and at any part of the world any crook will target people with money or people flashing all their bling, so just be casual and don't show off.

For a perspective on how safe it is in Tijuana, consider the following: there were 30 homicides in San Diego in 2010, and there were 400 in Tijuana.

That is a HUGE difference. I almost didn't believe it until I looked it up myself.

Murders in San Diego at lowest level since 1968 - SignOnSanDiego.com

I found another source that put the number of homicides for Tijuana at over 500 in 2009.

I look forward to visiting. I just have not been up to the hassle-my main agenda is great food so I need to find a way to find the best eats, markets and maybe a museum and not have to wait hours to get across the border coming home. Between my neighbors, my former volunteer colleagues (medical researchers) and current current coworkers I am collecting great ideas for Tecate, Tijuana, and Baja. Honestly, I meet so many people (latino and anglo) that cross the border a lot and no one is sounding an alarm call for general visits. I have to say my main issue is the hassle.
