I am planning a trip to San Diego, and have never been to mexico, so I'm thinking about going to Tijuana for a day. Is it safe? Are there restaurants that are clean and safe to eat at?

It's probably fine to walk across, go to a nice restaurant in Zona Rio during the day. But is it a safe place? No.

10 years ago.....YES, very safe. These days, not so safe other than a quick day trip to say you've been there.

Oh Johnny, we're sorry....so so sorry. These cats are fine...we walk with swans and hummingbirds in this lake of life. Don't bury your young with skeletons lurking in the darkness. The tin man waits in a dark alley....for you.

Just take a Google maps tour and pretend like you visited...lol. Actually it's probably ok to go during the day, but just stay in the tourist zone. Just don't be surprised if you're one of the few American tourists around.

just don't go down looking for hookers or drugs, and make sure not to flash money/jewelery. Hide your wallet and don't go to any ATMs down there. My friend got jacked at an ATM.
