unique areas to live in
so, as i have mentioned before, it will be myself, my husband, and our 6 month old son. we were considering places to live...rancho bernado and lakeside. both seem safe, and fairly decent areas.
are there any 'hidden gem' areas around mcas miramr that we can look into? places thar may not make the 'popular'ist but are still safe and reasonably priced? a small commute to the base is fine, but hopefully not more than 30 minutes or so. 2-3 bedroom...dont care what type of building (complex, duplex, single home, etc). someplace that has charachte would be cool...but not necessary...a plain jane area us ok as well.
somewhere close to the ocean woudl be prime due to the nice weather, and it not being 110 there..but its not necessary either.
I know these little hidden gems are out there, but I dont know hwo to find them.

There's University City on the west end of the base which would be closer to the beach, Scripps Ranch, Mira Mesa and Poway to the north. Mira Mesa is mixed, but there are some good spots out there.

The "pocket" neighborhoods tend to be in the city itself where things are more socioeconomically mixed. If you are looking north of the city things are a bit more uniformly upper-middle class.
Mira Mesa is the 'budget' option for the area you are looking at. There is a lot of multi-family property there, and some dumpy blocks. There are also plenty of safe and quiet residential neighborhoods through there. Scripps Ranch is pretty wealthy and expensive, although there is some less expensive stuff next to the freeway. Rancho Bernardo has a lot of retirees and multi-family property, it's pretty uniformly upper-middle class as well.
At some point you are going to need to just get in a car and drive around and look at some rentals. A lot of people just get an apartment in Mira Mesa for a while because it's central and there is a lot of amenities, and then later move on to a quieter area.

you might look in Ramona....its not close to ocean...but a very nice, family type of community. I raised my family there...and loved it.
