Default crime continues to drop in San Diego - who believes that?

Here is an article from the UT about how violent crime continued to drop in S.D. during the first half of '07

SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Metro -- Violent crimes in S.D. continue downward trend

I somehow don't believe it, especially when it talks about how much it dropped, I feel like it may be exaggerated and that the numbers have been manipulated. The reason why I don't believe that article is because I feel less safe each year here. I felt it was a lot safer back in the late 90's/2000. Yeah, S.D. is still one of the safest large cities, but whenever I read the UT I always hear about a shooting or stabbing here and there.

I was going to post this also. The comments are interesting, too. One talks about 5 homicides this month, another brings up the recent fatal officer involved shooting. Everyday (well almost everyday) I go to the UT site to read articles, keep up with the Chargers and Padres and notice there's always a story on violent crime. Given that not every single crime is reported to the newspaper, it gives people an idea of what is going on. I did read somewhere that crime stats in the San Diego region weren't accurate. I also think crime is picking up in San Diego also. Given how scandalous the city officials are, I can't really trust their figures to be completely accurate. I do agree San Diego is one of the safest cities in the nation.

I would like to know about the other cities in the region. I know National City usually has a high crime rate.

Yeah, I think a lot of the city officials might still be the same from Dick Murphy's time, but I'm not sure. If that is the case, who knows what might be up their sleeve. Actually for the record, there have been about 7 or 8 murders in July, and we still have 1 more week to go.

I don't it seems like more of my friends/family have been victims of crime sense the middle of 2006.Some even getting jumped and or stabbed. And I live in CV,a city where some say is safe, others dangerous. As for the UT reporting violent crime, they are showing the county that this goes on all the time. Why do you not see it on the news? It's "America's Finest City"(B.S.) and they might want to scare the tourist away because a majority of them would like to move here.

Actually they're talking about city stats, not county. Chula Vista is a separate city with it's own stats.

Now it is more believable since even though July was a deadly month, there hasn't been a single murder in S.D. proper in the month of August, and it's almost halfway through the month already. It just goes to show that crime happens in sporadic waves, with long periods of calmness in between. But when it rains, it pours. If every month of every year was more like July '07, San Diego's crime rate would be much higher.

Unhappy Crime Is On The Rise

I live and work downtown. People are getting poorer and the job market is dipping. When people have less they begin to compete. When People compete there is more crime. An average call to the police department gets a response is 3 hours. Have you ever heard of a crime that takes 3 hours to complete? The police department is shrinking, the population is growing and people have less money to get what they need. All perfect foundations for crime.

That brings up another problem that should be addressed or looked into. Since the small department is enforcing a general public of 1.2 million+, what crimes are NOT being reported? That can either make a huge difference or if in fact there is less crime in San Diego, wouldn't make much of a difference. Also considere crime close to the border, if a body is dumped in TJ, would that number go to TJ or San Diego? More likely it would be included in TJ's crime stats.

I'm looking through SignonSanDiego, there's an article in which SDPD captured two suspects wanted in a couple robberies in the town I currently live in. Just for the record, one of the places he robbed is called the Purple Parrot which has also been robbed in another town a couple times by different people. Kind of weird. Knowing this town, they'll probably take all the credit for the capture.

San Diego Metro News | SignOnSanDiego.com -- Pair sought in robberies in Ore. arrested in S.D.

The Real Estate boom created alot of unexpected wealth in San Diego over the past 5-7 years. When this occurs, it usually is accompanied by hope.

Crime always dips during these types of economic cycles.
