A thread I can finally jump on board with POSITIVE comments re: San Diego! Taco Shops does not a city make; nevertheless, SD does taco shops well. Some of our favorites...

1. Juanita's - Encinitas

2. Don Bahia Bravo - P.B. (the one in LJ has shoddy service)

3. Filiberto's - Encinitas... open 24 hours. Get the shrimp tacos.

I don't live in San Diego any more but I would have to say any of the berto's are pretty good. You know, Roberto's, humberto's, gilberto's, jilberto's and any other berto's there may be. Some might be a little better than others but most all of them have some pretty darn good carne asada burritos. That is one of the things I miss most since moving east. Nobody knows how to make a good carne asada burrito in Tennessee. Heck, they don't even know what carne asada is here. When we moved to Tennessee in March we brought 80 pounds of carne asada from Ramey's Meats in Brawley. Every time we attend a get-together around here we bring a few pounds of carne and grill it up. Everybody loves it. I prefer to eat the Ramey's carne straight off the grill, it tastes THAT good.

God I miss those Taco shops...

Here in Dallas, well, they're just not around.

Maybe if I close my eyes I can imagine a Muchaca Burrito.....I think I can smell it now.

Exactly...any ot the 'bertos!! One of my favorite spots though is La Posta in Hillcrest....it's one of our first meals when we go home to visit. I remember going to those places in the wee hours after the bar!! Nothing tasted better than a Carne Asada burrito con queso e creme after drinking and dancing all night!! aaaah..memories....

Default Old Town has the best food!

The best little Mexican restaurant that I have found is in Old Town which is north of the main part of San Diego. I wish I could remember the name of it. You should be able to find it easily on any map of the area. There are also a great number of specialty shops in Old Town and there is a lot of history to the area. Old Town is close by the 5 freeway so it is easy to get there.

La Posta is a good place to get food poisoning too! That place hasn't been cleaned in 20 years.

Old Town food is pure garbage. Every local and foodie with correctly operating taste buds knows that they're slinging nothing but over-priced Americanized Mexican fare dumbed down (and heat ratcheted down) for the heartlanders passing through. I may hate San Diego, but I will concede that there are some magnificent Mexican restaurants and tacquerias all over the city -- just NOT in Old Town. I'll admit, it's a bit counter-intuitive, but true nevertheless.

P. S. Lemme add this glaring omission to my list (posted above): Wahoo's Fish Tacos - cheap, spicy, great variety, authentic signature dishes.

Default Tacos Sabrosas

It's actually about six blocks outside of San Diego County (and don't forget your passport) ...

Tacos Sabrosas is in Tecate, at the SE corner of Ave Benito Juarez and Pdte V. Carranza, about 4 blocks west of the NW corner of the zocalo (plaza).

They only offer fish and shrimp tacos, but these are what Fins and Rubios *wish* they could sell!
