Thinking about some sort of whole-house water filtration system to install. We will be doing a big remodel and getting all new appliances and fixtures. I'm thinking a whole-house filtration system will help with wear and tear on all of those. TIA

So do you or someone you know have a water filtration system for their house or water softener? Do you/they like it? Pros/Cons? TIA.

Nope, and I don't feel any need to buy one either. The water tastes fine to me. I know my folks used to have a water softener but I never liked that because it took so long to wash the soap off of your hands.

Theat's weird. It may be my understanding is incorrect, but I thought that soap is harder to lather up and wash off if your water is hard. Thus installing a water softener should help you lather up better and thus making the soap wash off easier and not the other way around.

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

As for a whole home filtration system, one thing you have to keep in mind is that if you are filtering ALL the water in your home, you will be reducing, or eliminating a lot of minerals that are naturally in the water that our bodies need and use. Unless your family is big on taking supplements, I'd personally think twice about this one.

I have a RO faucet at my kitchen sink. Can't imagine life without it. However... I have a serious problem with those "whole house" filter systems.

Do you really need filtered water to wash the dishes? launder the clothes? Do you need filtered water for the yard/garden? washing the car? How about that bucket of mop water for the floor?

Think carefully and choose wisely.

RoxySD,

How is the reno going?

I bought a house recently which was built in 1947 that came a softener system. The softener system was set up exclusively for the house and washing machine only. However, all other external outlets like sprinkler system and other faucets around the property were straight from the tap.

I have heard that there are benefits to having a softener system in an older house. So far, clothes have come out with a little more life than when I was not on a softener system. The softened water for dishes leaves 0 spots and the soap lathers nicely.

Now as far as the actual scientific benefits to having one? I have no idea. WHat I do like is that clothes dont feel as heavy, water tastes good from the fridge filter and dishes seems to wash with ease.

I think if you have an older house with older pipes, it may be to your benefit to have a softener system installed wisely. As I stated earlier, the previous owner took immaculate care of the house I bought and when he had explained why he took precaution in having a softener installed, it seemed to make sense. In other words, just run the softener to places that it will need it the most, not the entire property.

Good luck!

I have also heard there are benefits to either a softener system or filtration system. It's easier on pipes, appliances, skin, hair, etc. I was hoping to get some un-biased experienced uses here but I guess it's not very common thing in SD.

RoxySD,

ON a side note, my wife has very sensitive skin and really likes showering with softening system in the house.

We have the under sink one. Water is great! A whole house one is a waste imo.
