No school isn't an issue. Both are under 3.

Closest areas I can think of that might suit your needs and your budget are Clairmont or North Park. But then we're starting to get back to long commutes ...

I'm not familiar with San Diego south of downtown, so I don't know of any suitable areas down there. Anyone?

Another thought - is there anyone on the base who can offer suggestions as to where you might find suitable housing? A housing office or something like that?

The bases do have housing offices, and you can also check out base housing. They're managed by Lincoln Military Housing. Lincoln Military Housing

I agree that Poway Unified School District in North County has the best schools. However, the commute to Coronado would be BRUTAL. Point Loma is near Coronado and is safe, though housing costs can be steep. You can also try Mission Hills (my cousin has three children ages 1 to 5 and is happy with her neighborhood there). Clairmont Mesa or Tierra Santa wouldn't be bad for families either. North Park, South Park, Golden Hills, Hillcrest, and downtown give easy access to the Coronado Bridge but those neighborhoods are more for singles and good night life, I think. Best of luck!
