You have a backup plan, and a realistic idea of what you're jumping into. You don't have any dependents. Now is the time for you to take chances and to do stuff 'for the experience'.

Not dumb at all!

It's not a bad idea to consider buying, but you're right - when you buy you're much more "stuck". Home ownership gets (over)sold as part of "the American dream". But really, it's not the best path for every single person. You need to consider all your circumstances.

Nicest safest and cheapest huh? You will have to go off the coastal path for that Ramona, Lakeside, Parts of El Cajon, Alpine, La Mesa, Rural Mountain Empire, Santee (Though can be very pricey compared to surrounding area).

Don't move to SD without a job unless you have $20K or more saved! That's what you'll need to live for a year with roommates and on a very tight budget. The job market is tight everywhere but in SD there are a lot of other people who come there just for the weather, scenery, and social life and don't mind just scraping by.

Good call Larry. I came here with nothing and I will say my family saved my butt. I still owe them hugely. That was the worst financial struggle I have ever been through. Do NOT do what I did. Now that it's over everything I have, I feel a strong sense of accomplishment and now that I'm stable I'm glad I had that experience. I learned a lot. However if it's avoidable don't come out here with nothing. Not eating really isn't fun I promise.

Don't move without a good paying job first. You can't buy without a job unless your paying cash. You need to get back to reality. You can relocate easier from a high cost of living area to a low cost of living area. But moving into a high cost of living area without a job first is crazy.

You cant get safe nice and cheap all together here. You cant get anything except a mobile home in the ghetto with that budget. I almost got a granny flat in a pretty sketchy place with no shower for 600 a month. Id have to shower in the peoples house. If you come here it is really hard to get out too because you will have no extra money to save for the move. even if you are living as cheap as possible.

I live in La Mesa Village in a small 16-unit complex. Our one bedroom apartment is only $850 a month. It's a relatively quiet area and pretty decent neighborhood.
