Hi all,

I’m 27yrs old single female from Sacramento, CA and am planning to move to San Diego some time next year. I’m am looking to rent, but I’m not sure where I should start. Where is the safest, nicest, and cheapest place to rent in San Diego? I know what I’m asking for is too good to be true, but I’m hoping I get lucky and someone may know of some good deals. I’m willing to pay anywhere from $500 to $700/$800 a month for an apartment or house/condo. Please, all advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

For that kind of money, either you'll be sharing with roommates or you'll be in some of the sketchiest parts of town.

Without a roommate, you'll be needing to go further south . . . to Tijuana. Maybe you can afford some studios. Safest/nicest isn't going to match cheapest very well in that price range.

"Nicest, safest" areas will require about three times what you plan to spend on rent.
San Diego is NOT an inexpensive city, housing-wise.

Do you want to live in the city of SD or just SD County?

You may be able to rent a room (out of a house or condo) for that price; otherwise, you'll have to find a roommate or settle for a bad area.
$700-$800 is what apartments rented for twenty years ago.

I don't know if this would be considered advertising, but these are two apartment complexes that I have lived in--in the unincorporated Rancho San Diego area (between El Cajon & Mt. Helix). This area is considered East County and is about 20-30 minutes from the beach or downtown SD. Both apartments were the "safest, nicest, and cheapest places" that I could find in San Diego County.

Highlands at Rancho San Diego, El Cajon, CA 92019 (EC delivers the mail), 1-866-686-5365
1 Bed $1095 - $1120, 2 Beds $1350 - $1490, 3 Beds $1635 - $1705

Woodbridge at Mt. Helix, La Mesa, CA 91941 (LM delivers the mail), 1-866-264-7614
2 Beds $1280 - $1420, 3 Beds $1595 - $1820

You might consider apartments in La Mesa, but NOT inside El Cajon. Check crime ratings for any area that you consider.

Also, IF you qualify to buy a condo--and want to--your mortgage MIGHT be less than what rent would be.

If I had that tight budget I would do something like this (studio on cortez hill part of downtown)
Large Studio Apartment in Authentic Downtown Building (http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/apa/2417141480.html - broken link)
its a pretty safe and quiet area for living downtown.

Thanks Justin! I took your advice and been looking into the condos. I think its a better deal if I'll be paying $1000+ a month. The only reason why I want to rent first is because I'm not really sure if I want to stay. I like SD but I'm afraid I might not like living there.

Where do you think I should start looking if I plan to buy a condo in SD? I'm looking at around 150k and under. Do you think I'll be able to get a decent condo in decent area in central SD, north of SD or SD county.

Thanks! I appreciate your advice.

LOL, that's a good question because I don't know. I'm hoping to find one when i move there. I'm hoping to apply in the field of public services. Maybe the department of probation, or Department Of Homeland Security. I was a probation officer before i got laid off due to the budget cuts.

If you do come here without a job, make sure that you have a very large savings to hold you until/if you get one. Homeland Security is Federal Government, and very hard to get into. I have Federal reinstatement status, and after two years haven't gotten any offers yet. Probation is county, and they're not hiring, they have a freeze on. There are lots of budget cuts here, so you may want to reconsider.
