Now that I am here and searching for houses, it doesn't seem like the housing market is that hot for buyers. Doesn't look like that many desirable properties are coming into the market. But of course, "desirable", is very relative to individualistic choices.
My husband's work would be in Kearny Mesa area and I would want him to be able to come home for dinner at a reasonable time, say like 7 or so. My choices so far have been Scripps Ranch, which has good schools for kids and quiet, suburban family neighborhoods(I have yet to visit it but this is from pics and posts), but in last two days I drove on I-15 and boy, O boy! Let's say I wasn't pleased when I came back.

I am ready to compromise on the house size. No pool for me in the backyard, but closeby would be good. range $600-$700K, 4-5 bedrooms, hardwood floors, good size yard to run and eat out. Plenty of natural light Very well built house. With good use of space. Sometimes the living room is huge and bedrooms small. I like those spanish houses with central courtyard and rooms all around. Of course they are out of my price range.

If I wanted to live closer to the beach, where can I look, which would still not be super expensive and a family area.

People here have a wealth of information and hopefully soemone can guide me in the right direction.
Regards,
Bhavs

Check out Clairemont. Huge area, some parts really crappy (apartments + condos), but many others very nice. 92117 zipcode. Close to Kearny Mesa.

Check out the Eastlake (Chula Vista) area. Not necessarily "close" to Kearny Mesa, but the commute shouldn't be too bad. It's a great family neighborhood. Zip 91915. Lots of great houses and good schools.

You won't get all you want in UC but you will get some of what you want. My husband works in Kearny and its a pretty easy commute. A bonus of Clairemont and UC is that you won't need to pay air con bills either and it is warmer in winter. You will need to pay them in SR.
