Default What is a native?

Just curious who people consider to be natives of a particular place as the term is used quite often in these forums.

For example, someone who was born and raised in the same city they live in but then they move away when they are 20. Are they still a native to that city? What if they were born in that city but moved away when they were six months old? Or perhaps someone in their 40's who was born somewhere else but has lived in the city since they were an infant? Are they not natives?

A native in its loosest sense is someone born and raised in particular city or neighborhood. That person has grown up in a culture that has helped shape the person they are at present.

I dont think where you were born and then moving at 6 months means a thing in embodying a native stamp. I am doubtful the recollection at 6 mos and then growing up in a different city would have any long lasting effect to that person in regards to how they incorporate themselves into their local culture to claim being native.

We are not indigenous plants that are native based on its ability to survive in its given climate.

How about potheads? They are highly endogenous in the area, very organic, have a natural appearance, and difficult to remove, like "weeds".

OK, OK, that was a bad pun...don't crucify me, a non-native.

I think a native is someone born and raised in a city town or culture.
They also know the history of said town, city or culture.

Sounds like "native" is a very loose term ranging from 'had to be born there' to 'got there five minutes before you did.' It's interesting because people are very passionate about and take great pride in calling themselves natives.

I've always thought of a "native" as someone born and raised in a particular location, and hasn't lived anywhere else.
