My daughter was in town working ComicCon. She stayed at the W. I heard there were a lot of SteamPunks there this year. Best costume per my daughter a guy doing Darth Vader who looked 7 feet tall.

I was at a meeting at a downtown hotel Wednesday and the ComicCon crowd was checking in. Looked like they were primed for fun.

We went on Friday. Had no issues getting into the area and parking (had a prepaid parking pass) and no issues getting out. The convention center itself, however, was a nightmare and we will never again go. It's not that interesting, not sure why so many people want to go so badly!

Started going in 1990, stopped going in 2007. There are just too many people now, and the last couple of years I was there, it felt like what had been a nice place for us comic nerds to meet up with old friends suddenly became this hipster/Hollywood paradise where everyone runs a movie review blog or maintains an Internet encyclopedia of monsters and occult trivia. Felt like there was no room for those of us who just wanted to search for some old comics....

Yeah, I'm bitter.

It turns out I will be in town while this craziness is going on this year...I'm not a comic book fan, but obviously this is a big well-known event so I would like to see and experience some of it. Any advice on how I can do this while in the city?

There was mention of free events...? Besides people-watching, is there anything else to catch around this time?

I worked at ComicCon for three years, and never saw any free events.

Just wander through the Gaslamp when it's here. You will see everything you want. Some places, like JoltNJoes, turned themselves into geek central. I don't think there's anything that you have to pay to get in there.

Some of the very few women who attend look great in costume.
