South Park/Golden Hills
One more thing, no one seems to talk about South Park or Golden Hills? The rentals seem pretty affordable, like anything in life, is it too good to be true?

South Park/ Golden Hills is still in the process of becoming fun and funky. In certain areas a large Mexican presence- - - scensters/ hipsters are moving in and making it cool now though so enjoy

The further north you go where you are to the east of the park the more you are into South Park, the further south you are, the more you are in Golden Hills. IMO South Park is the more desirable area. Definitely worth checking out on a block by block basis.

^^I'd say yes. The housing stock is much better in South Park than North Park (but there are some nice pockets to be found). North Park is more vibrant with it's bars, restaurants, shops, etc.

However, the area of North Park north of Adams between Normal Heights and University Heights is a pleasant little hidden pocket of nice smaller older homes. If you are in that stage of life, it's well worth a look see. If you want more street life, then it shouldn't be your first choice.

Perhaps people are not talking about "Golden Hills" is because its name is "GOLDEN HILL". Adding the "s" is a sign you are not from here. The OP is excused, but the rest of you should know better!

Golden Hill can be pretty cool on a block by block basis... I'm sure it will gentrify with the proximity to Downtown and the many Victorians in the area, but it might be a little while, with its proximity to the not-so-great areas immediately South and East.
I agree that South Park really doesn't get the attention it deserves, perhaps because it is primarily residential and doesn't have many "magnet" shops, restaurants and hip bars that bring outsiders in like North Park has... but it's truly my favorite area of the city, and especially neighboring Burlingame, which has become my favorite neighborhood in the city, hands down.
I'd love to get my hands on a craftsman in Burlingame, I drive through all the time just to gawk, and I love it whenever I see a restoration, because I know how great it's going to be in time... and I would try to get one if I were convinced that I will stay in San Diego for a good number of years... but I can't say with certainty where my job will put me in 5 years, unfortunately.

Golden Hill is gentrifying as we speak. My friend owns a home off B st. and 21st St. and his area has changed dramatically since he moved in. Lots of renovations going on in the neighborhood.
Also, if you haven't been to South Park in awhile, it's time to go back. The hip restaurants and shops are moving in. As a matter of fact, the quarterly South Park Walkabout is coming up at the end of the month. It's when the shops, galleries, hair salons, dog wash joints and restaurants stay open late and welcome customers.
I couldn't agree with you more about Burlingame. It's another one of my favorite hoods in San Diego!
