Spiders are very beneficial. They get rid of other bugs that can be more of a nuisance to have around. Being afraid of spiders to me is silly. It is not like they are looking to make us their lunch. Most spiders are not harmful to humans. Of those that are, there are very few serious injuries or deaths caused by them. I'd be more concerned about rattlesnakes than spiders.

Everyone swears there are no brown recluses in California but there are!!! We live in Murrieta and I have seen three in the last few months. Furthermore I was an EMT years ago and I saw a patient in the ER who had been bitten and the whole arm was rotten! It was gross! They do live here. There are also tons and tons of wolf spiders as well as black widows! Pest control is a good investment!

I have a cat and she likes to go outdoors. Would the spiders bother her?

Maybe if she was the size of a bug. I think it more likely for the cat to bother the spiders. Then she stands a chance of getting bitten. There were many pets in our neighborhood (ours included) and never heard of any getting bitten by spiders.

I've had to kill four different spiders in the last week including a black widow which had set up shop behind my toilet.

No, your cat is fine. I've never even heard of a cat getting bitten.
