It is always unfortunate to me when the people of an area get mad at the OP when they bring up an issue that is counter to their perception. The violence here in San Diego is real. Cop killings, freeway shootings, cab driver executions and on and on. If you want to believe in this fairy tale I wish you well. The violence and the shadow of it's spectres is dramatic, and at time pervasive e.g. when every electronic billboard for two hundred miles talked about a shooter a highway crzy person.
I am out of this discussion for now. It's unfortunate that the anger I speak about has taken hold here.

Of course. And meticulously collected crime statistics (which people have cited here, and which can be easily researched, are all a part of the fairy tale, right? The perception of this city as being more dangerous than others is incorrect from the standpoint of actual real-world data.
Your reaction to people's simple disagreement is rather out of proportion. With the possible exception of the deleted post up thread, nobody has been reactionary, rude, or angry except you.
It's a big city and random incidents do happen. But, generally speaking, San Diego (and especially North San Diego, north of the 8) is a safer place to live than Anchorage metro.
2010:
San Diego: population 1.3 million, 29 murders, 300 rapes
Anchorage metro: population 350 thousand, 13 murders, 343 rapes
Where did you get your stats from? Print the source, please.
I have no response and won't get into this. My concern is the random and very violent atmosphere that San Diegans live with. I am learning about it. If you don't want to talk about that's fine. Alaskans don't have freeway shooters. If you want to respond to that I would be interested in your opinions.
JMHO but it seems like you are almost looking for excuses to move out of San Diego. It's hard to compare Alaska and most cities there with most cities in the USA. San Diego is not a dangerous city. Just out of curiosity, what other cities have you lived in besides in Alaska? I don't see anyone at all being "angry with you". I agree sometimes locals can get defensive about their city but I just moved here a few months ago and I'm being totally objective. I think everyone is being totally objective in their responses.
I'm not going to say that San Diego is safer than cities in Alaska. But it's like trying to compare apples and bananas.

I think the crime is getting worse very quickly in San Diego. California releasing 40,000 prisoners, San Diego choosing helicopters over police on the ground, and laying off hundreds of police officers probably have something to do with it.

I still think of San Diego as one of the safest big cities in the U.S.
I don't recall asking for advice on my personal choices. I was just curious how you deal with the crime here. It seems quite random and uniquely randomly violent e.g. freeway shootings.
How do you deal with any random part of life? You don't let it scare you, especially if the randomness is so infrequent. As others have said, I never feel threatened here. San Diego's crime rate is incredibly low for a major city. Just like I don't worry that I'm going to get e-coli or have a great white attack me, I don't expect to get shot while I'm driving on a freeway. I'll let others live in their panic rooms.
People are too freaked out from a 24-hour news cycle. Back in the day, if you didn't read the paper or catch the six o'clock news, you didn't know what was happening in the community. We focus so much on the Chelsea King and Amber Dubois tragedies that we don't see how we're safer today that in the past. San Diego had less than 700K people in 1970 and we're reaching that murder rate now with a population of 1.3 million.

Not at all. The area has grown on me. It is just that in the last 5 months the type of crimes got my attention e.g. execution of cab driver, assassination of police officer, 2 separate freeway shooters. These types of crimes got my attention and surprised me and that was the reason for my post. Those are just facts and they really are not in dispute.
The other interesting social part to me is that people insist that it is safe here. And yes you are correct I think that people are relating their own "comfort level" as objectively as possible; albeit with some juvenile exceptions imo.
People consistently say it feels (and in fact IS safe here) Perhaps it has been so in the past and it does indeed sound like that has been peoples experience who have lived here. However, that clearly has changed. Perhaps that is a temporary change...perhaps not. I hope that it is. Nobody wants to live around crime.
I would agree with you on the Anchorage San Diego assertion but for different reasons. The personal boundaries in Alaska are far different than here. More formal, more and less accepting however more friendly, may seem like a contradiction but it works... I have thought that may be due to the fact that many people there are armed.
Here in California, boundaries are more flexible in some ways not in others. People drive much more poorly here (thread on dangerous driving) than in Alaska. Part of that is weather. People exploit opportunities from getting ahead in line to getting in the fast lane fastest.
The distinct difference is that here the crimes recently have been against members of the "you and me". In Anchorage it is predominantly gang and or targeting of homeless.
To your other question, I have traveled a lot and my job allows me to come into a turn key home and easy access to the city. I have worked in many states and countries. All have their blessings and their curses.
I hope that this trend of crime in San Diego and the environs is self limiting. If not I will probably relocate further "out" from the city.
