Unless you can work from home or have nowhere to be, its great

Good place to be if you are retired though....

As far as the fire dangers....some parts of Ramona got it pretty bad in 2007. However I have not seen much damage outside of that. Plus, if it were THAT bad, fire insurance there would be sky high (SDCE), which it is not. Just know what you are getting into. But thats life up there. Its like buying a house near the beach and then getting ticked because years later, no one told you that you might have rust problems on your house from the salt water in the air
As far as Ramona, it's flat almost prairie and not really a fire area but Santa Ysabel and the Estates are just West of major burn areas year in year out during Santa Anas. The buck brush of cedar creek East gets lit up many times a year. It's (back country) already had multiple fires that were put out this year. You really need a evac plan.

We drove from the house to Costco Poway in 22 minutes mid afternoon yesterday most of the first 10 miles following a big rig. Easy drive. The roads all the way are very well maintained and banked even better. Enjoyed it. Bought some eggs and a loaf of date bread at the market. Next step is to drive it mid week early morning.

Dont forget the commute going to that area in the afternoon mid week.

Keep in mind too AA, that you were considering working elsewhere in the county at other hospitals.
Unless you are working in Poway or Escondido, the commute would NOT be fun going to South Bay or other.

Many schools are on min day this week so the traffic has been pretty light after 130 or so. The chances of you having "free sailing" on a regular basis are dismal at best. Wait until you get a 2 hour commute home on a Friday.

Are you looking at Ramona now? Downtown Julian to Costco Poway is 37 miles one way.

The home we are looking at is 4 miles west of Julian. We liked Ramona but want the view at elevation >3500. I was surprised our ride to Poway was that quick and easy.

From Julian you also have the option of getting to I-8 and taking that into town.

We go camping out there and sometimes go that way.

Regarding a fire plan, you might want to consider one of those one-time use whole property fire retardant dispensers. Out there is where the 2007 Witch Creek fire started.

That is really strange. You'd still have to average 90 mph all the way to make this happen in 22 minutes.
