I'll be attending SDCC this spring and quite simply, I need a place to live. Is it possible to find a studio that's no more than a 30 minute drive away from the college for $800? Or do I have to go with...roommates?

San Diego City College, the community college. And I used that site's app and have found quite a few in WALKING distance to the college! Just hope they're not scams...

Occasionally I see studios on Cortez Hill in older buildings for 800.00-no less, so that is good that is your range. It is walking distance to city college and a very safe and pleasant area. The exteriors of the buildings look nice, but don't know about the inside. I am not sure if they advertise. They just tend to put a little sign up for passers by. Are you close enough to the area to take some walks around? The more peaceful areas of Cortez Hill are basically between 7-9th Aves and North of Ash to Date St (check out a map.

^ Ditto to everything Clevelandgal said about Cortez Hill. Being further inland it is cheaper than places like Little Italy and the Marina area, but being up on the hill, it is outside of the area where the Homeless Herd congregates.

30 minute drive from City college? That's basically all of central San Diego. North Park, South Park, City Heights, Normal Heights, Hillcrest, Banker's Hill, Golden Hill, University Heights, Downtown, Little Italy, Cortez Hill... And if you're looking for a studio, you can DEFINITELY find one for $800 or less. If you're lucky you can score a non-trashy one bedroom in that price range, even.

Hell, you can get to City College in <30 minutes from La Mesa, even, though I'd stick with the central areas and ride a bike or take a bus. The parking's horrid.
