I bought a used car out of state before moving here. I paid everything off but the DMV registration office wants to charge an extra $60 in residual sales tax. They said there's a minimum requirement of sales tax for cars bought in CA. Is this true..anyone know what it is?

It used to be that the DMV would charge the sales tax based on your bill of sale.
That is to say, if you bought the used car for $1,000, they would charge you the current sales tax on $1,000. $1,000 times 6% sales tax = $60
People became wise to this and always had 2 bills of sales. The real one and a fake one for the DMV at a much lower sales price.
I don't know what the DMV does anymore, perhaps they use the Kelly Wholesale Blue Book and have a standard. You have to go to the DMV website.

You continue to pay the sales tax each year with registration. The value drops each year and less tax is due.
Other states make you pay the property tax on the vehicle with your state property tax, CA adds the tax with registration.

I would just pay the $60 and be done with it and be happy it is not higher.
