Guys, thanks for the dialogue on this thread. As someone that doesnt have kids, I am really only seeing these things from the outside looking in. I am also not blind or naive to say that drug abuse only happens in "x" areas and not "y".

I think its a healthy sign for a school district to acknowledge certain facts and make people aware. I dont think there is any shame.

I dont think there is any "one way" to raise a kid(s). But being united and communicating are paramount.

Jeez I remember when I was growing up in NYC, my parents were very close to the other parents. Not in the sense that they were buddy buddy. But they essentially had an understanding of the level of responsibility it took to communicate to one another. Basically in so many words, when my parents gave the other parents the blessing to treat me as they would their own if I was out of line.
As a kid it was terrifying to know that there was no escape! lol
However, in the back of my mind, I always knew there was that support system and that having respect and decency were really important.
So things like calling when you got to your friends house and things like that really go a long way.

Generally speaking, wealthy suburban towns have bigger problems with teen drug use and drunk driving while inner-city kids have to deal with more violent crime. You don't see "good kids" in the 'hood overdose on heroin, which happens surprisingly often in wealthy east coast towns.

The reality is there are a lot of marginally supervised kids with cars and money in these towns... their overworked parents are letting the TV do the babysitting. I grew up in a town like that and we lost a kid every year to drunk driving.

I grew up the same way Shmoov.
But were the problem lies imo.
Some parents today are too self indulged to get to know their child's friends parents.
You don't have to play bridge or gin rummy with them.
But at lease be on 1st name basis.
And it's not so much a NYC or Cali thing it's a human thing!
I'm a youth coach, and i can't believe how many people drop off their kids and go shopping instead of hanging around and getting to know other parents.

Thats interesting.

It amazed me when I played sports growing up, how few parents would show up to the games, let alone make it to practices.

For as much of a pain it was to see parents there at games etc cheering on, only later did I see that they really wanted to be there and show support. This is whether they really understood the game or not ! lol

My kids are grown adults now. They are successful. We had our bumps. My advice.

Be vigilant
Choose your battles.
Involve other adults and most importantly tell them:

"if I acted the way you are I would be in jail or worse. why would it be different for you?"

for some reason that line with specifics worked.

AA,

What you just said is the same thing I just saw about a news piece that **** did on substance abuse in the county.
The numbers they came up with about Poway were pretty startling to me.

As DINKs, planning on having kids at some point, its sort of bittersweet to see this news, but I do accept it as a reality. I am glad its out in the open, but of course on the other end, wish it didnt have to be.
