Whatever, ignore the opinion of a San Diego county native. All the hipster transplants know better

1) I'm a native.

and 2) I've lived in Hillcrest with my Husband, and as a single woman as well.

But of course I wouldn't have any idea what I'm talking about. Someone from El Cajon would TOTALLY know much more about my home turf and stomping grounds for the past 20 years than I would.

fwiw went to Hillcrest today responding to a craigslist ad interview at a restaurant for a cook position. When I got there I realized this "restaurant" named fiesta cantina was a gay bar........
I have no problems with gays but I can't bring myself to work at a gay bar. I gave Hillcrest a shot today soon after my original post and once again it proved ultra-gay. I would love Hillcrest to have something for everyone but it doesn't. When I was I kid in Santee/El Cajon schools Hillcrest was at the butt of every childish gay joke I heard. I wish Hillcrest could do better to rise above that image but it only will in the eyes of people who want to believe otherwise. Once again I do not hate gays and my kids were taught from the start to embrace peoples differences. However I cannot see me or my family ever living there. Notice the rainbow flags lining the streets btw. If the OP wants to gave Hillcrest a shot than I say go for it, but sign a short term lease for now. If you don't end up liking Hillcrest, I'll recommend Mission Valley. I'm fond of East County personally but it's where I grew up and far from a "cool" place to live

It's not like El Cajon is far away from Hillcrest............................

I'm technically not out of work. I lost my full time job in 2009, and replaced it with two part-time jobs, while I look for another full time job. But, if I was looking for a cook job, I would have no problems working at Fiesta Cantina. The Craigslist ad specifically states, "GAY FRIENDLY," so why did you even bother to apply if you have a problem with it.

There are enough out of work people that would be glad to work at Fiesta Cantina, and I'm sure that they had lots of other applicants besides you.

hmm you saw same ad. I am Gay Friendly and have no issues working at a restaurant that serves a large gay population. However I have issues working somewhere that will have a 100% gay population where they go to meet sex partners. It would be uncomfortable for me, that's all. I wish the ad said it was a "gay bar".

You realize that as a cook, your interaction with the gay customers would be, uh, about zero? You cook the food, the runners take it out. You don't talk to the customers, you don't shake hands with them, you do nothing other than cook. It is likely they wouldn't even know you are there.

The odds of one of the gay customers who you think are cruising for sex coming into the kitchen to hit on you are about the same as the odds of Heidi Klum giving me a call and saying, hey, Tony, I'm bored, you wanna hang out now that I'm single?
