We've camped at San Onofre. Note that they have two sites, one above the beach and one beside the creek on the other side of I-5.

You will need to get reservations way in advance.

Silver Strand has camping on the beach. Those reservations should be easier to get.

Silver Strand is probably not noisy, but it's very restrictive: Silver Strand SB

San Onofre actually has three campgrounds: San Onofre SB

None of these is cheap. The cheapest places I've camped on the beach were in San Felipe, Mexico and in Erendira, Mexico.

I thought about mentioning the Mexican beaches between the border and Ensenada, and would have 10 years ago, but would not today. I've heard too many negative experiences, mostly involving crime.

Silver strand is AWFUL when it's full. There's no tent camping, either, it's all RV's, and you're packed like sardines. (my parents camp host there). It's fine at off times, like right now, but it's still just concrete and RV's.

I'm actually a fan of San Elijo and San Onofre as far as the beach campgrounds go. None of them are "cheap" for camping (none of the state parks are anymore) but it's hella cheaper than a motel for your beachside vacation. I'm cool with supporting the State Parks, anyway.

There's really no camping ON the beach proper here. Baja is the closest you'll get Southwards, and North the closest is the central coast.

In the RV section, yes, it is like a trailer park.

It's actually my favorite beach for day trips down by the entrance, where you have a lot of room to yourself for most of the season.

Great beach for kite surfing, although I haven't tried that.

You can camp in tents on the other side of the 75, the lagoon side (with permit). Access to the beach is through the tunnel. They have pits for a campfire and picnic areas with restrooms.

I stand (sit) corrected. If that's the case, I bet it's pretty alright. I'll have to check it out.

I loooove the beach itself, my mom and I go clamming there, and it's really really uncrowded once you get out on the sand.
