Is it possible for a single female 50ish to find a 1br apartment close enough to la jolla to bicycle there to work? hoping for a place that's safe, cat friendly and less than 1400/month?

PB, OB, BayPark or Sports Arena. What type riding? Serious with panniers etc where hills are no issue or beach cruiser flat ground?

That would put you within 5 miles. Clairemont, Mission Valley, downtown, banker's hill etc will add distance and/or hills.

Yes, it is possible. Look in North pacific beach, which borders la jolla.
But, where in LJ? They call UTC 'la jolla' where whole foods, trader joe's etc is....but that is totally different than LJ proper, as far as location and biking, as well as housing.

If LJ proper, check north PB as mentioned, and also there are apartments in LJ as well as carriage or guest houses that can be in your budget. As for safety, SD is known to be fairly good as far as urban cycling goes....but obviously you will deal with constant traffic. Personally, riding in LJ itself would be 'okay'; some streets and areas would bother me more than others, b/c it's so congested anyway, and filled with driving tourists who do not know their way around. But it's certainly do-able.

If coming from north PB into that part of LJ, the main road is quite busy, but certainly bikeable.
As for your age and gender, it's irrelevant, unless you feel your age limits your physical abilities, but then you probably wouldn't be attempting to bike.(: I would not bike at night, male or female. But people do it. Traffic is the main deterrent for me in that regard.

You could also rent in UTC, and have plenty of options for your budget, somewhere near UCSD. Again, depends on where in LJ and what type of rental you are looking for. Good luck!

great to know it's not un-bicycleable. I have a new Specialized and would like to use it to avoid the traffic congestion, and to keep in shape of course. thanks for your input.
