Not to inject any political fire here, but yes look at Europe at the moment. This is one is a bad example of liberal extremism, they're far too liberal to the point where they have had a massive influx of a Muslim's from other parts of the world, because they know they will be taken care of in place such as Great Britain, France, Spain, Italy, Denmark and a host of other countries. It's gotten to the point where it is starting to take a toll on their budget and cultural history because the Islamic people in Europe are starting to have more influence than ever before.
France is desperately trying to hold on to whatever French cultural they have left. Granted, all kinds of people from all over the world lives in Europe, but when your country is founded on a certain belief, such as Christianity, and now suddenly you have huge demands coming from the Islamic community wanting to inflict their 3rd world mentality, beliefs and their cultural into a modern society, that is a recipe for disaster and war.
Thankfully it hasn't happen as bad in America as it has in Europe, but all we need is time, and time isn't favoring the US one bit.
America does need to brace for Islamic takeover in the future. It doesn't matter how you feel about it politically, does anyone truly want Sharia Law being enforced in the US? I highly doubt it. This is my point.
As I look around at the people living in my apartment complex, over 75% from what I can see, are either people straight from the Middle East, Eastern European and some other race. Hardly any of them work, most are on some sort of government programs that they stay on for life it seems like. This is what I am talking about, our government is allowing all these people to come to our country to be on welfare, SSI, disability, when non of them have paid their dues to this country, yet get everything for free, and steal cheating the system by working for cash under the table. This is not fair to Americans that have been here forever, and can't get one penny from our own government, it's wrong and needs to stop immediately if we want to save our sanctity and prosperity for future generations! I am not at all against helping the poor or people in need such as Americans that have paid taxes at one point in time, I am just against people that are here for only 6 months from another country, and automatically get welfare, because we feel sorry for them.>> WTF!! Hello, we are broke as ****, and we are giving our money away to these people? Our government is bankrupting us folks.
Republicans like to talk about cutting spending, since they love taking over and invading other nations, but the Repubs will never even come close to cutting the military budget that is choking our national budget. Both political parties are Hippocrates, but at least the Democrats are more about helping the people in the majority, when the Republicans are more than ever are for the rich, while pretending to be for the middle class. They're not fooling anybody.
Aw, c'mon! Stop holding back! Tell us how you really feel!
Actually, what I see going on in Europe mostly a group of people being highly voluble. Kinda' analagous to the Tea Partiers here. Because they're so loud and get so much press, they're thought to be much more "mainstream" than they really are.
Of the European people I talk to (DH's family and friends), none of them has the sort of attitude you're describing. And when I read English press, they all describe the attitude you're describing but none of their op-ed pieces seem to agree with it. (I should try reading LeMonde, to get another European POV ... )
Having lived in London and only recently returned to California, I disagree. The financial and political crisis in Europe is NOT going to go away, it's just a matter of time before it all implodes. Similar to California and other financial debt problems in other states like Illinois, New York, and Mass. I think the Tea Party analogy is doesn't quite fit. The election results of 2010 were evidence that the Tea Party was more mainstream and popular than the dysfunctional 'Occupy' movement.
As for Europe becoming more conservative, it is and not just because of the reasons I mentioned previously. The student riots of last year in London left many Britons looking upon the rioting of the student as the act of a petulant brats. Little sympathy there. Then, the riots across Britain last August left the social welfare state open to unheralded criticism. Britons from every class and race criticized the generous welfare benefits from the UK govt., the toleration and enabling of single mothers whose children were largely to blame for the looting, and even black culture. Seriously. They were conversations I never imagined could have happened in a Europe mired in PC-Doublespeak. Britons and Europeans are seeing the folly of the generous social welfare state.
Which British newspapers where you referring to? Just keep in mind they're open about their political persuasion which makes them more readable than the American newspapers. Many of the one's I read including but not limited to the Telegraph, Times, Daily Mail, and Guardian all blamed the above mentioned groups for the riots. Ok, well, not the Guardian, they're virulently leftist after all.
Look, I could be wrong and Californians and the nation could slowly but surely become more liberal and progressive. However, there are real-world examples of it going the other way depending upon conditions. Conditions, I must add that the Democrats seem intent on replicating here in California and the US. The unsettling bit is the traditionally left-wing working classes of Europe eschewing the conservative parties for nationalist politics.

I agree with most of what you written wholeheartedly but disagree with last bit somewhat. Let's face it, the Republicans are a mess and offering up some mediocre candidates(I'm being generous with that description) but the military budget is peanuts compared to the looming crisis; entitlements and their unfunded liablities. No doubt the military contracting method sucks, but the debt the US is racking up is mostly from entitlements. Bill Whittle breaks down the revenue and outlays quite saliently.
Nor do I expect the Republican establishment do the right thing and cut spending. The Republican Establishment eg Boehner, Cantor, McConnell and the rest seem intent on pointing out the Democrats overspending and graft but little of their own. Nor do I expect them to stand up and do the right thing and make the moral case for cutting entitlements-they're too afraid of the political consequences even as the US faces an unprecedented economic crisis. Remember, Obama with the Democrats and Republicans sanction is blowing out the budget as America enters the cusp of the Baby Boomer retiring and collecting Social Security, et al. We maybe done as a 1st world nation and may soon become a third world nation. I had hoped the Tea Party's success in 2010 might temper the Democrats and Republicans excesses but I see little of it occurring. I haven't given up on them yet though.
I also disagree with the Democrats being the party of the little guy, that big corporations and wealthy billionaires like GE, Warren Buffet, and more people in Wall Street support Obama and the Democrats and have made billions during the past four years is damning. Former Carter campaign manager had it right(to paraphrase), there are two parties in America; the corrupt party and the stupid party with Democrats usually being the former and the Republicans usually the latter.

I see what you're saying but we can't exactly kick them out if they are here legally. America has always been a melting pot of different people. I hardly doubt Shari Law will take over. Christianity already has.
San Diego County and city has always been thought of as being conservative. Do you think it will continue being conservative or shift to the liberal side? What areas do you think this will happen in? I know east county is conservative but over the last few years it has had more minorities move in.
San Diego city currently has 2 openly gay candidates running for mayor (out of 4) and no one cares! The fact that the County GOP gave their endorsement to one of the gay candidates, says a lot. DeMaio wins GOP endorsement | UTSanDiego.com
Conservative? Yes. Liberal? Yes. Being a little bit of both isn't a bad thing.

I always hear Republicans complain that their tax money goes to free school lunches, low income health care, and other social services but I would honestly rather have my money go to health care and education than wars in the middle east. I got into a debate with a very religious friend about the war and he started quoting the bible saying it's ok to attack the middle east because "they're our enemies". he also said that if I'm against the war, I must be against America and our freedoms. We have been there for 10 years, it's no longer "fighting for freedom". It's just a big waste of money. I do not think education and health care should be completely privatized. Privatizing important services like these makes money more important than the well being of others.

Anyone that thinks they can encapsulate certain complex events such as war and then dictate ones degree of patriotism on it is complete fool.
No one will ever know the real reasons why its happening or the motivating factors. Too many moving parts.
That is what cable news channels do so well. Provide polarized views about their own opinions on the world with "experts" that agree with a particular sentiment one way or the other.
Unfortunately spending money isnt as easy as simply inserting a square peg into a square hole. Budgets and taxes 'breathe' thus there are too many other grey area factors which cannot support govt sponsored services without losing out somewhere else.
You look at Florida and Rick Scott w/ his "medical" affiliations then you look at the 170+ million I believe, that just got spent on drug testing for those needing assistance. Only 2% didn't pass and they have a process for those as well.
Seriously, you think that didn't make money for somebody? I would say that money could have been better spent.
and it's no wonder people are getting sick of the republicans with things like this:
Republican's think they can change the world by invading weak nations with no military presences, and injecting so called "Western" democracy in a 2,000 year old country with deep belief's, ritual's and tradition's. It never works. and it never will!!
Why do we care so damn much about all these Middle Eastern countries blowing themselves up?? The only answer to it all is OIL.
This is my take.....The US helps the rebels by whatever means fight off their current government regimes, then afterwards when the wars are all over, the anti-american regime is destroyed, and thousands of people have died, the US finds a leader that has Western beliefs or ways which possibly is currently already living in that part of the world, and talks them into running for president or the leader of that particular country to help give the United States influence and power in the Oil Trade within that specific country. Libya and Syria comes to mind, they got Oil
The US government can care less about countries with no resources, it's all about the oil and other rare earth materials that we care about. Russia has rich oil reserves and other resources, why don't we invade them? Oh yeah BTW they got tons of Nukes..mmmmmm..has the US ever thought about stopping them? I don't think so, they can easily annihilate our country with the nuke material they have, and the US doesn't do anything about it? Maybe it's because they actually have a legit military that can F us up if they wanted to. The US is the bully of the world, and we always pick on the smallest guy, how about going up against someone our own size for a change.
If the Republicans could have their way, we would be in war all over the world forever, and they would make false claims, and fear monger our brains to death that war is good
