This route sure sounds a lot safer than the PCH route. It could be a bit longer but the PCH south of Old Town doesn't seem too bike friendly.

I just started riding the bus from PB to the courthouse and the bus travels along PCH and I'll tell you this: There are certain sections that appear to be very dangerous for a bicyclist in that there is virtually no breathing room in between you and any given car. Particularly one section that goes over a bridge and it is there, over that bridge, south of Old Town, where it appears to me that there is virtually no path for a pedestrian or bicyclist who values their life. I don't ride a bike to get to downtown, these are just observations I made while riding in bus number 30. Odd that a big American city with such great weather has a lack of quality bike paths. Good luck an be careful out there as it seems like we hear about a bicyclist dying on a San Diego road every so often.
