San Diego's Coronado beach named the best in U.S. - Yahoo! Travel

CORONADO, Calif. — Like a Hollywood star, Coronado's 1.5 mile-long beach literally sparkles, thanks to the mineral mica glinting in its sand.

That's one of the reasons why Coronado — flanked by the iconic hotel featured in Marilyn Monroe's 1958 film "Some Like It Hot" — has been named the No. 1 beach in the United States in the 2012 survey by "Dr. Beach" professor Stephen P. Leatherman of Florida International University.

IMHO, the best beaches are in Hawaii. As far as local beaches are concerned, I prefer Moonlight in Encinitas or even La Jolla Shores. Pacific Beach/Mission Beach have a good environment as well.

Coronado does have the smoothest sand though... I guess it really depends on the activities you do.

That list that Dr. Beach puts out every year isn't really that great and they also "retire" a beach and it can't be #1 once it's already won. Most of the beaches in Hawaii have already been listed so they can't be on it again.

I totally agree the best beaches are in Hawaii.

Water temp is generally too cold in SD to be at top.

Didn't know that! I will no longer take these rankings seriously...

Yep. I do admit he includes good beaches. I have been to many of the ones on his list. However, each year the list gets more and more worthless because it excludes the previous year's winners or he just totally doesn't list them on the list anymore. So each passing year the list becomes more and more useless as far as "best beaches" go.

You are so right. I'd love to see his list of beaches that have already been retired. I will say that Coronado has the best sand in the county, it's just that the water is always colder than the beaches to the north during the summer.

I'm headed to the Key West/west coast of Florida later this year and am looking forward to seeing those beaches. People say they are nicer than Florida's east coast. IMO, the beaches of Miami and Jax are ugly and boring. The only thing they have going for them is that water is warm and nothing else.

Coronado is an amazing beach, but I still think I'd give the nod to some of the beaches in the US Virgin Islands (Magens, Trunk) for pure beauty

Good grief we if start factoring the VI in it will be all over. My parents honeymooned on trunk bay and spoke fondly of it, and after my dad passed I snuck some off his ashes there. relax people, no one but the donkeys were there at the time. Anyway that is one heck of a beach.
