Wow, it's looking like I might be moving to San Diego from Colorado! I have a family member that moved to San Diego almost 2 years ago and I've heard all about the cost of gas, food and real estate.

We were out there recently and I narrowed down the area to Carmel Valley, Solana Beach, Del Mar since I want my husband to have as short of a commute as possible. We're looking to rent a house/townhouse because we have a dog and really need a yard for him. It's just two of us, no kids so we don't care about schools. Any great neighborhoods anyone would recommend looking at? What are these areas like? I saw about 2-3 grocery stores in the area.

We are really ready for a change of scenery (beach), weather, new restaurants and culture so hopefully there are some good things other than the cost of living negatives.

Since you want a short commute, where is your husband working? Cross streets would help.

My husband is currently in negotiations with Qualcomm as well. We should find out any day now if we are moving.

All those areas are good. Del Mar and Solana will be more expensive (especially Del Mar) and you may get less bang for your buck if you're renting since you're very close to the coast. Del Mar dog beach is great too. Take our dogs there a lot.

Carmel Valley is a little more suburban and cheaper since it's a few miles inland. All areas are good though. I own a condo in Carmel Valley (Pell Place) that I rent out. CV is a great location since it's centrally located and not far from any place.

Can't go wrong really with any of those places.

1ginacolada - did your husband get a job with Qualcomm?

Thanks barryg for the info - this is all becoming very real and it's happening fast! Already had a house I fell in love with fall through due to timing issues and now I'm thinking we might be renting an apartment for 6 months unless I find something I really like. I'm ready for some better weather since it's been over 100 in CO for that last 5 days!
