Default Lincoln Park

Hello! I've been trolling around these forums for some time, since there seems to be lots of good information about different areas of the city. However, I now have a question that I can't seem to answer just by looking at what's already been said.

My grandfather lives in the zip code 92113, which when I look at the map appears to be in Lincoln Park. He lives just west of Euclid, which seems to be the border between Lincoln Park and Valencia Park. I remember from visiting him when I was younger that the area is kinda sketchy. He's lived there for 30+ years, and apparently never had trouble with his neighbors. But he's getting too old to be living alone, and refuses to leave, so my husband and I are considering moving in with him to help him out. We're in our mid-30s, and look Hispanic (even though we're really not). Could you give me an idea of what to expect in the neighborhood/area? I've heard it's a gang area, is it really dangerous? Are there precautions we should take, or things to keep in mind?

Thanks for your input!

Here's a link to the SDPD's crime statistics.

You decide whether you're comfortable living there.

I will also point you to a Gangland episode about Lincoln Park.

Yes its a known gang area and HEAVILY surveillanced by not only the Sheriff's Gang Task force, but SDPD's Gang Unit. There are gang injunctions that have helped in separating and tracking known gangs and members. Its quite extensive and has so far been very successful at keeping gang activity lower than it has in the past.

If you are NOT familiar with HOW gangs work in known areas like Lincoln Park, call the source SDPD and get the facts.
Gangs | San Diego Police Department
County of San Diego: Special Operations

Its likely you may never run into a gang member the whole time you live here or could be living next to one and never known it.
Considering your grandfather lived there for 30+ years speaks for itself. What does he have to say? Has he been shot at? Knifed? Mugged? in his neighborhood? IN areas like this, there are good streets and bad streets. He could very well be living on a street with neighbors he has known for just as long and two streets down could be trouble.
You might be surprised at some of the information you get from the Police gang units about how they operate here, contrary to hyped TV shows and misinformation.

Gangs and members deal on a completely different level than the 'average everyday citizen' and have more internal and turf related problems than a couple taking care of grandparents based on my experience working with the Gang Suppression unit in SD. So for every story that is in the media, there are thousands of people that go to work everyday and have families there.

Nonetheless, there are stories that come out every once in a while about someone being misidentified and killed. Considering you are in your 30s, based on stats that I have read, you are too old to fit that description. Most of them happen to teens and early 20s.

So my advice is to absolutely be aware, call the gang units and let them know your situation and see if its the right fit for you.

It's also important to remember that the gangs here are not as bad as the ones in Detroit or LA or Baltimore. Baltimore, just to pick on it, has 600K people and they had around 200 murders last year. We have 1.3 million people and there were around 40 murders.

And also, there are 440 documented members of Lincoln Park. The area they live in contains tens of thousands of people. Clearly, there are plenty of people who aren't members of the gang living in the area.

My guess is that the gang members for the most part leave those people alone. They're not stupid. Start killing people who aren't involved in gangs and the police will make find a way to make things very difficult for you. That's bad for business. If the cops are all over you, how are you going to make money dealing drugs?

it's also not the early 90's anymore. Those guys are all dead, in jail, or old men by now. Most of the violence around gangs is drug related, inter-gang member and mostly younger (teens and early twenties).

Lincoln Park is not a nice neighborhood by any stretch of the imagination but I doubt you'll have to fear for your life there, especially if you keep to your home and your self.

As usually spot on!
Do you guys have jobs that will transfer here, because the job market pretty rough here!

All in All LP is not a bad place to live.
The area is full of a lot of,retired city workers/retired military that look out for each other!

It is ghetto...thats a "blood" area if I am not mistaken. There are lots of bad things that happen there but for the most part if you mind your own business you will not get shot.
I would move to Paradise Hills instead...its not too far from there and is a bit safer/nicer.

Please don't pay attention to numbers but rater use them as a tool.
If we paid attention to numbers mission valley/Linda Vista would consider Detroit.
