You'll be fine. During our brief time in SD, some of our friends were White, Mexican, and Asian (mainly Filipino). My mother had a Filipino boss that literally treated us like family. There is also more interracial dating in SD than you would probably ever see down south. If you are a friendly type that can interract with various types of people, then you should be fine. If worse comes to worse, you can always shoot up the 5 to L.A. or even the 15 to the Inland Empire on a weekend.

I am moving from Houston. I really don't want to regret my move if it is worse than Houston.

Default How is SD for a black man?

Quite frankly, who gives a good rat's ass. Way does almost everything in California have to be racial, political preference and/or sexual orientation?

Y'all's in America in case you haven't noticed. Get your noses out of the "we're special, we're different" troughs and do what's right for you, your neighbors and the country.

you would notice it if you were in my shoes. It is kinda hard to see things from an observer point of view.
The sad thing is everything is racial (at least where I am at now). And denying things doesn't cause issues to disappear either (at least to the ones that are affected by it).

SD is a large metro. You will have problems if you go looking for problems just about anywhere with sizable population and diversity. If that is all that is bothering you in Houston, then there is no 'cure' here or anywhere else for that matter.

My best friends in SD here are an interracial couple. I dont hear them pissing and moaning, but like I said, they dont go looking for it either.

I've met a few African-Americans from the San Diego area here in the Atlanta area. According to them, they had no issues with San Diego. They came to the Atlanta area with their parents. One women said that she missed San Diego.

It is interesting that someone mentioned Poway as being a not so good place for Black people. The only person I've ever heard of living in Poway is Tony Gwynn.

Because?

Because no one wants to live in "the hood" if they don't have to.

Good for Mr. Gwynn

I agree, there are some who are quick to accuse minorities of looking for or finding something that isn't there, but we are all animals of learned behaviors. I have run up against the occasional overt low-lifes as well as the person who is in denial and wrongly espouse that we are in a post racial era - ahh NO! But I too tire of whiners of any race who feel they are entitled to whatever - I don't think any one race has a lock on this trait; .....and Coffeelover1, I am not saying that is what you are doing!!

We hope, well I hope that folk's basic instincts are admirable. I don't look for folks to reject me. I love meeting and talking to new people (much to my husband's chagrin). I have generally found in places I've lived, that people will usually respond to you in the manner you approach them. If you are a person who is outgoing and open to different folks, more than likely you will not have an issue here or any place else.

Coffelover1, as a minority, you too are probably well aware that you don't necessarily have to be around someone of your own ethnic background to have a good life, but you do want to be comfortable in the belief that the lack of that particular ethnic group in a certain area isn't due to some deep and entrenched negative environment. I haven't lived in such a place in the past 40 years and hope I never will again. However the last time I did, I was in South Gate, California, where I went to high school and where there was a spoken rule to not sell to minorities. Interesting, that community is predominantly Mexican and Black now.

Anyway, you should come to San Diego, it's beautiful with open and friendly folks. I'm enjoying being back and can't imagine allowing any thing or person the power over my actions and deny me this wonderful place. We are in the south part of San Diego County and my neighbors are Asian, Hispanic, Black and White - it's quite nice.

No one wants to live in the "hood". And it's Tony Gwynn's choice to live in Poway. I'll fight for his right to live there. However, if it were me, and it was a choice between Poway and San Diego, I'll pick San Diego. Please remember, I'm coming from the perspective of living 30 minutes from Atlanta, one of the most violent cities in the USA. San Diego doesn't seem that bad in terms of safety. It depends on which part of San Diego.
