My question to you is brother

Why are you asking white people about racism ?

What on earth do they know ?

They are never at the receiving end because they are white.

When I was living in Carmel Mountain Ranch many moons ago, there were a handful of Blacks in Poway, CMR, and PQ. Charlie Joiner lived somewhere in the area at the time and his daughter was at Rancho Bernardo High. Mount Carmel High in PQ had a few Black students as well. I'm sure that at this time home prices are keeping quite a few people (Black, White, or otherwise) out of the area altogether.

Please remember, I'm coming from the perspective of living 30 minutes from Atlanta, one of the most violent cities in the USA. San Diego doesn't seem that bad in terms of safety. It depends on which part of San Diego.
The funny thing about Atlanta compared to San Diego is that if you drive 30 minutes from Downtown, you more than likely will still be in the SD city limits. It is like here in the Atlanta area where you've probably driven through parts of two or three counties in 30 minutes *lol*

I can't speak for the man of course, but based on knowing the area I would say that Tony Gwynn's spot probably gives him decent access to either shoot down the 15 to go into San Diego, shoot up the 15 to hit the Inland Empire, or cut across to the 5 to go to the O.C. and Los Angeles. It's all about location and Gwynn is revered enough in San Diego to where I doubt even the most prejudiced SD or Poway native would mess with him.

Atlanta isn't that large compared to San Diego, so if anyone wanted to escape Atlanta and still have access to it, it can be done.

I think Tony Gwynn's case might be the same for any athlete or other famous person. One thing to think about is this. Sure, a famous Black person could live anywhere and not be messed with and if it happened, a lawsuit would be in order. The question is "could an ordinary, non-famous Black person live in certain places"? It is that question that needs to be reflected on and answered.

It may still be possible to "escape" San Diego and still have access to it, but of course you would be dealing with traffic and other issues. As you know, Atlanta is another beast in and of itself.

Personally, I think an ordinary Joe can live in certain areas in and around San Diego and not have too many problems. I have known several that have done so and their only real complaint is the high cost of living. If anything, based on my past experience as an African-American in SD, I would take my chances in a spot like Poway before I would set up shop in some of the areas that may actually have more African-Americans (i.e. the Eastside or the Southeast).

it all depends on a few factors. I'm African-American and I've lived in places where it was majority White and I was being hit with violence. So for me, it might not make that much of a difference.

I really want a response from black people but it would be rude to exclude anyone I guess. I usually pay more attention to the ones who say they are black anyways.

But I too tire of whiners of any race who feel they are entitled to whatever - I don't think any one race has a lock on this trait; .....and Coffeelover1, I am not saying that is what you are doing!!

We hope, well I hope that folk's basic instincts are admirable. I don't look for folks to reject me. I love meeting and talking to new people (much to my husband's chagrin). I have generally found in places I've lived, that people will usually respond to you in the manner you approach them. If you are a person who is outgoing and open to different folks, more than likely you will not have an issue here or any place else.

Coffelover1, as a minority, you too are probably well aware that you don't necessarily have to be around someone of your own ethnic background to have a good life, but you do want to be comfortable in the belief that the lack of that particular ethnic group in a certain area isn't due to some deep and entrenched negative environment. I haven't lived in such a place in the past 40 years and hope I never will again. However the last time I did, I was in South Gate, California, where I went to high school and where there was a spoken rule to not sell to minorities. Interesting, that community is predominantly Mexican and Black now.

Anyway, you should come to San Diego, it's beautiful with open and friendly folks. I'm enjoying being back and can't imagine allowing any thing or person the power over my actions and deny me this wonderful place. We are in the south part of San Diego County and my neighbors are Asian, Hispanic, Black and White - it's quite nice.
This is a great post MovingAloha. I am surprised there has been a response of 0 to it considering how level headed and positive it is.

You are brutally honest. No one can complain about your post. But matter of fact is I am a very reserved person (not very outgoing to anyone regardless of age, race sex etc....). That has pros and cons I guess. But anyways, I don't have relatives as I do here in houston that is what motivated me to ask things on the board, otherwise I wouldn't even have cared. But going to a new city where you literally know no-one, it is good to know the characterisitics of the city.
