Whenever I hear the term "nature of the beast", it is usually used to describe something bad.

Well, considering I come from a long line of combat veterans, am one myself as is my oldest son, I don't consider the military to be something bad.

This is the way I see prejudice in racism. I've seen it living in metropolitan Atlanta, so it would no shock me, period to hear of any stories of racism in Atlanta. I've lived it down. I've been called the "n" word, some of my "classmates" have threatened me claiming they were going to "lynch me"(and this was mainly Paulding County). I lived where some people were flying Confederate flags. I have seen discrimination where I live, so there is no shock factor if it happens in the metropolitan Atlanta area, or any other part of the South for that matter. Given the violent history of the South, it's no shock. However, I've never been to San Diego. I've heard that it made the list of cities that were 10 best for interracial couples. I haven't heard of San Diego being involved in terms of the riots in the 1960s. So if I were to hear any stories about racism in San Diego, it would be a major shock factor for me, because I've been under the learning processes that San Diego is suppose to be better than that. I'm not saying perfect, but to a higher standard.

My husband and I are both retired Navy. One of the big draws of San Diego, was coming back to a large Navy population. We live South of San Diego proper and I see quite a few folks rocking Navy and Marine Uniforms down here. It takes approx 15 minutes for us to drive to 32nd Street Base to use the Exchange and Commissary, so it's a good fit for those stationed at Big Navy and over on North Island.

As I stated we made a determination to be near Navy. If we just wanted to be closer to more Black folks, I suppose we would have moved near an Army Base, as their population has a more representative number of Blacks. But we were more focused on the Navy aspect and San Diego.

It's stuff the Klan and Aryan Nation like to use. It's not a compliment.

They are right about one thing, though. As you get more and more interracial mingling, the idea of discriminating based on someone's skin color goes right out the window.

If you think about it, this place has hundreds of years of Mexicans and Anglos intermingling, marrying, and having kids. So a mixed race child or couple is, well, nothing unusual. A lot of people are part Mexican and part Anglo.

In a place where that happens, the whole idea of discriminating against someone based on their race very quickly becomes laughable.

I'm not saying it doesn't happen, and that there aren't any racists. I am saying I don't see it. But then, it's something that's not acceptable anymore so it's going to be very subtle and not overt.

let's face it people.

When compared to the east coast....San Diego's black population is almost non-existant. Barring el Cajon and a few other areas.

I was used to places like Philly, Baltimore, DC, Florida....all with very large African american populations and when I got to san diego, I found myself noticing black people more, because it was so freakin rare to see them!!!

id be like "omg a black! wow!" where as on the east coast, thought nothing of it because they're so common lol

But this is the question: What kind of life could a Black person have in San Diego, keeping in mind what you said?

The same as you can have in any major metropolitan area. The percentage of black people here is around six percent. That means in a city with 1.3 million people, there are tens of thousands of black people.
