Sort of reminds me of Sea World's fourth of July in 2008. It's supposed to be a 20 show. After the first few minutes, one of the fireworks shot to the ground and just happen to burn the wire which communicated the time code and launch sequence. It took an hour or so to fix and once fixed, 15 minutes worth of fireworks were shot off almost all at once but nothing like what happened last night. it took a few minutes to get them all gone.

Yes, it is a colossal screw-up, but this is the fireworks show people will be talking about for years to come.

It will be the talk of many a fourth of July conversation while waiting for the current year's show.

I had a perfect bird's eye view of this from my balcony in the Gaslamp. I was so happy I didn't need to buck crowds & could instead stay home & watch the Vegas va-va-voom from home. Lucky me. I was ready & waiting, door wide open, camera in hand, lights out so as not to interfere with the great pics I was going to snap & email around to impress all my friends. Then, it sounded like an explosion & all I saw was a big ball of smoke & flash of light. I thought it odd that the finale-ish fireworks were beginning the display, then wondered if there were an explosion & what it might be... a truck caught fire, someone's BBQ exploded, a beach bonfire gone awry. The sound was so loud, people actually were running on the street below me... not sure what they thought was going on & if they were running to see the display or to get away from incoming schrapnel.

It was chilly. People rushed onto rooftops so as not to miss a moment. We waited & waited. People began leaving rooftops. After 10-min of pacing, I turned on the lights, began a movie, eventually closed the door to keep out the cold & turned off the camera.

And, that was my first July 4th in SD. Boo...

Still & all, at least no one was hurt, but I feel badly if any youngsters were staying up late with mum & da' on the beach waiting for the fun to begin. Find some better firework fiends for next year city of SD... those currently employed make children cry.
