My jobs before I moved to San Diego were very flexible with regard to where you worked. I liked working from home more than a coffee shop, but some people like the energy. My current job very old school if it's 8:01 am and you are not at your desk, jaws are flapping.heck I had to relearn to use a mouse bc I have a desk top (gasp) Come to think off it I have never had a professional job like this...but it is a small price to pay to live in paradise.

That's kind of the opposite of what I've experienced.

I worked for the same company in DC and here. In DC, if you were scheduled at 10:30, they wanted you actually physically on the selling floor at 10:30. So if I punched in at 10:28 and got onto the floor at 10:31, they'd consider it late. They told me to come in about ten minutes early. I told them that the time clock wouldn't let me punch in more than five minutes early, and if they wanted me to be in at 10:20, then they should schedule me at 10:20.

I came here and nobody gave a crap as long as you punched in within five minutes of your scheduled time.

Now that I'm working in an office, the same mindset holds. Nobody gives a damn when you show up, or when you leave. Show up at 9:15 and leave at 4:50? Fine, just get your work done, and it's all good.

So it shouldn't be a surprise that people might be out at coffee shops or other places. Don't forget, a lot of people will go there with their coworkers to get out of the office and have a chat about a project. As long as they're getting their work done it shouldn't be an issue.

I say the same thing and its not just in peak vacation season either.

This is a I work so I can play type of place. This can be refreshing and sometimes nice if you are career driven.

Yes, I think that a good number of people either own their own businesses or can work from home. I've met many people that either own their own business or work from home and they have flexible hours. I also have other friends that are in high end sales and they have to work during the weekend but they get a day or two off during the week to make up for it.

That was also one of the things that I wondered about. I always worked in a formal office environment before moving to San Diego so I never had time to do anything during the day but I work from home now and have the flexibility to go out during the day which I often do or meet friends for lunch and there always seems to be people out and about at Home Depot, the Mall, Target, Starbucks, etc.

Of course in a city like San Diego it could also be other negative things like unemployment or under-employment.

Because it's summertime! School is out, tourists are in town, college kids home from school, among other things. I love it!

Bingo. According the link below, SD Metro has the highest percentage of people who telecommute in the entire country. I know a lot of people who have offices in their homes. Not sure I could do that since I'd be too distracted, but on the other hand, must be nice to have the flexibility.

Pretty cool link, thanks for sharing sdurbanite

Yes its very cool to telecommute, although recently havent been doing as I would like to lately.

As far as the people out and about, it seems no different to any other summer in San Diego. Tourists, kids off of school, holiday weekends. Its great!

I work a professional "real" job, however I choose to work Sunday through Thursday most of the time, so I'm about and about Fridays. I wouldn't think my situation would be all that unusual.
