exactly. it was never that great of a paper to start with but at least it was salvageable before Manchester bought it.

Holy crap. Is it possible for you to not turn any thread into an anti-conservative rant? Jesus.

The new owner has been publicly whining in a very vocal manner about "freeloaders" who read his website without buying a subscription. Yeah, like he's not making money on the dozens of advertisements which take up ~1/3rd of the screen every time someone visits.

So, anyway, I predict total failure. If a top quality paper like the New York Times fails at a pay for content website scheme then a third tier paper which produces less then 1/4th of it's own content (the other 3/4ths is already available free online from the agencies which actually write the newswire articles) doesn't stand a chance. BTW there are two easy work arounds 1) is to use the same browser but clear your cache/cookies, while 2) just switch to a new browser after your limit has been reached (I.E. view the same page but instead of using IE try FireFox or Chrome as the limit is based in your cookies/cache).

Other quality sites include the Voice of San Diego, the San Diego Reader, San Diego Magazine, KPBS (the local NPR affiliate), News 8, 7/39, 9/59, and several other local TV and radio stations.

In each edition, on page one, under the Union Tribune logo, the UT prints a slogan that says that America is the greatest country in the world. I have to wonder why that slogan was approved by the person who sits at the top of the UT's food chain. Some of their writers are good, others I don't waste time reading their work. I subscribe. I subscribe to their paper because I need a hard copy, because it's the only daily hard copy in town and because it's good to go when you bolt to Black's Beach.

Given Doug Manchester's history of gay bashing I'm half surprised he doesn't declare gays to be agents of the devil as the paper's motto.

That's why the local gay community doesn't like Carl Demaio, the openly gay GOP mayoral candidate. He is friends with Manchester and gets campaign support from him which makes NO sense seeing as how homophobic he is.

I can think of 4 reasons why Manchester runs a slogan, on a daily basis, that says America is the worlds greatest country. Because he truly believes, with his heart and mind, that America is the worlds greatest country. Because someone paid him to. Because he figures it will help sell more papers. Because it's a combination or conglomeration of the aforementioned.

He is selling right wing talking points so he probably thinks wrapping himself in the flag will help him sell more papers even as he advocates some very unAmerican things.
