You could always rent a U-Haul trailer, if one of the vehicles is capable of towing it. If you have spare room - in the vehicles as well as the trailer - you could always put an ad in the rideshare category of craigslist [in various locations along your route] and help out someone who needs to get from point A to B. Since you're going anyway, it could help offset some of the expense of the trip.

Another option is to put your stuff on UShip.com and let the transporters bid on it. Quite often they'll pick up additional loads to help offset the costs of larger loads they're already hauling. Ever seen the TV show "Shipping Wars"?

I'd rent a truck and just do it myself. Anything which didn't fit I'd just buy new in San Diego. Get a trailer and hitch your car to it and have your wife drive the other car.

When you do the cost comparison, think it through carefully. Don't forget to factor in gas, meals, and overnight stays in hotels.

The cost of renting a truck and driving here from DC seemed to be cheap when I first did it. It was around $1000 less than having someone do it for me.

But then I remember the trucks get something like 10 mpg. Well, there's 250 gallons of gas right there.. At $3 a gallon, I just ate up $750. And then there's the hotels, where we'd be talking a minimum of three nights at $75 a pop. That's another $225, and we haven't even started with the meals. Another $30 a day or so, right? Now we're spending more than it costs to have someone do it, and we have to do all the driving and all the work.

Basically, it came down to me paying for the airfare. I took that route.

In all fairness you are eating meals no matter where you are!

True. But you're not eating them at a restaurant. Most of them you're eating at home. I brought a couple of pans with me, and was cooking from the day I got here!
