San Diego Gas Prices - Find Cheap Gas Prices in California

Or, is waiting up to 2 hours to get back into the US, not worth it?

Just wondering.

Nope. Unless your time is really worth almost nothing, I suppose.

Not only the time to get there and back, I'm not sure Mexican gas meets US car specs. Replacing catalytic converters ain't cheap.

Yeah the apocalypse is here. Cross the border to save 20 bucks? Maybe you will run into Mad Max while you are there.

How much gas do you burn waiting to get back across, and how could that, plus two or three hours wait, plus the time it takes to drive down there and back (another hour?), Plus the possibility of f***ing up our car with bad gas possibly even come close to being worth it?

Mexico pretty much has state/gov controlled gasoline; Pemex. It is a monopoly. You will find an occasional small gas station with something different-these should be avoided. Pemex is comparable to US gas in most (not all) ways. They don't have the pollution standards we have though in CA and I am told their gas burns a little dirtier than ours. I am not a mechanic and I don't play one on TV, so my testimony means nothing really but I have used Mexican gas before. I have used it for several weeks on end on trips through Baja and did not find any damage to the fuel pump, filter, or engine.

Now for the reality of buying Mexican gas to save money from US prices- forget it. As others have explained, the time waiting in line to come back will eat your gas (usually 1/8 to 1/4 of a tank). Also the amount of time waiting will not be worth it as well. Another consideration is buying Mex insurance when driving your car in Mexico. Don't drive without it. The majority of US carriers do not cover you Mexico without an extra cost. This will be another expense added onto your quest for cheap gas.

I say if you find yourself in Mexico on a daytrip or other business; gas up. If this is merely a journey to gas up and return rapido, don't try it.

In the 70's when the gas shortages came about in this country I was stationed in SD. At that time it wasn't just the gas was going up in price and suddenly. It was much worse. You could not buy gas on Sundays at all. Many gas stations were closing. The ones opened had limited supplies. We would line up for gas in lines that would stretch a mile and wait hours and hours for our turn at the pump. Many times the station ran out of gas before we made it to the pump. Cops had to be assiged to control the traffic tie ups that backed out onto streets. Rosecrans, Sports Arena, University Ave, El Cajon Bl come to mind. It was a sight to see. I always hoped CA and the USA would learn from those times ,and change our ways and dependence on foreign oil. I'm afriad little has changed concerning our dependence on driving in SD ,or elsewhere in the USA.

|We started driving across the border at that time also. The gas was much cheaper and the time to cross and return over the border was much less than now days. However the grade of gas was cheap and many of us no longer went. I have no idea what it is like now in Mexico as far as gas goes. I doubt I would drive over in this day and age though ,dispite the cost of gas in Calif. If I had to I could find plenty of ways to get around greater SD by bus or the trolley anyway. I have done it before I could do it again.
