I’m curious to learn more about the expat/foreign population in the San Diego area. By this I am referring to folks who come from different countries to attend the universities in San Diego area or on extended work stays, business expos and conferences, more in a transient status and not the established immigrant communities that call San Diego home today.

Also, is there a lot of consistent foreign tourist traffic into San Diego? Do a lot of British and Australian folks pass through San Diego, similar to LA?

The idea is to gauge a sense of how cosmopolitan San Diego and its surrounding vicinity would be.. any feedback you could provide would be much appreciated.

As for foreign tourist traffic, my wife and I had lunch at the Hotel Del Coronado last weekend. We heard languages being spoken by the guests from all over the world. Mostly European and Asian languages. Other than our waitress, I don't think I heard anyone speak English!

I'm not even on the ground yet (moving in January), however I imagine there are a fair amount of foreigners working at the Universities. My wife is European and it always seems at least half or more of her colleagues are Asian/European.

Yes, there are a fair numbers of British, Australian, and Canadians. According to the 2010 census 22.5% of the population of San Diego county was foreign born.

U.S. Foreign Born Population by County in Areas With At Least 10%: Table - Bloomberg

Also here is the census "quick facts page":

San Diego County QuickFacts from the US Census Bureau

Population 3.14 million, 77% white, 49.8% female, ~88% under the age of 65, ~34% are college educated, ~56% live in a house they own, and it goes on.

I would say that we are pretty diverse compared to the rest of the country. California in general has more foreigners than any other states beside for NY and TX I believe. San Diego attracts a lot of foreigners due to our location and weather. Brazilians populate large parts of Pacific Beach, Middle Easterners reside in El Cajon, we have the second largest Chaldean population in the nation. A lot of Hispanics of course, and various other nationalities from all over the world. I mean we're not LA status in terms of being that true international city, since our Airport is so small and only has one runway which limits international travel, but we hold our own.

The thing is, many of these people are fairly segregated throughout the county. So it all depends on where you go to seek that diversity.

I am not sure why people seek diversity of culture in an area. If an area is not diverse enough use the City-Data to find your paradise.

Also, complaining about it does nothing. Feet however, have a more positive outlook.

I believe that assimilation is a more healthy paradigm.

Which parts?! I can't wait to go there and tell them that soccer is not football and that their team sucked last year, or at least will suck next year.
