-weather: As fun as 120 degrees in the summer is, I'll choose year round 70 degrees in SD
-palm trees: Palm Springs probably has more. It's in their name.
-scenery: Depends on if you like majestic mountains and desert, or OK mountains and beach/ocean.
-atmosphere: Walk into a Dennys at 4:30 PM. That's the atmosphere of Palm Springs.
-food: San Diego has more varied food, and at the top end, surpasses what Palm Springs is offering.
-people: Lots and lots of olds in Palm Springs. I'm not waiting to die, so I'll go with San Diego.
-activities: If you like golf, Palms Springs is great. Then again, so is San Diego. Plus SD has more outdoors activities in general.
-overall: I chose San Diego, so that probably answers what my opinion is on it.

Not sure of the intent of your question - for a quick visit? for a vacation? to live? My 2 cents:

weekend - toss-up, they are both nice to visit
vacation - San Diego on all counts (more variety; I can't imagine spending more than 3 days in PS)
to live - San Diego on all counts

Palm Springs, a great place to visit for a few days, but I wouldn't care if they had all the best of the above, would never live there....the heat is unbearable!

I just meant in general, which one do you prefer. You can give your opinion for vacation and for living.

Palm Springs is all about the gay 90s.

You're either gay or you're in your 90s.

I don't think you can compare the 2. SD is hands down a better place to live. I really enjoyed the visit we had to Palm Springs but a weekend at a time is enough. I went in april and it was horrifically hot. What stood out is all the peoples skin looked like shoe leather. I'm not sure if that was intentional (ie tanning by the pool too much), or just living in that blazing sun could do that. I would much rather live in SD and visit Palm Springs than the other way around.

Yeah, they don't even compare. SD is a major meto areas with everything that comes with it. PS is just a small resort city with few residents (I think the whole metro area only has like 200,000 people among all the local cities?) So SD is like 15 times bigger. It's way too hard to compare these places -- it's like comparing Del Mar to New York or something.

The only thing I do like about PS is the scenery -- those mountains are beautiful. And I love the palm trees, because it feels like a desert oasis. SD has palm trees of course, but they're more urban, and there are also plenty of other trees. PS is primarily palm trees. So SD has a nicer balance overall. But what we don't see enough of in either place is those big, fat Canary Island palm trees that are so popular in San Francisco. SD and PS have more of those skinny Mexican fan palms.

They are two different animals.

Maybe another desert city but not SD metro, no way.
