But I have to say that the line about San Diego surfers I heard when I moved to SD a long time ago from a bustling, vibrant, crowded, intellectually hopping NE place (which I was happy to leave), "They gaze out over the blue ocean with eyes that have never been clouded by a profound thought" (quoted from memory), is spot on...but so what? To each his/her own...

Clearly, the guy is wrong.

Hella is a northern California thing.

As for culture, you want it, you can find it. It's as amusing to me to see people say there's no culture here as it is to see them say the Gaslamp is nothing but chain restaurants. It shows me that the person writing it has no clue about what they're talking about.

And yeah, it might be a spot-on description of Mission Beach. But it describes the author - not San Diego.

I'd have to agree. Sounds like he picked the wrong area to live, should have found a place with AC and made some friends and that would have helped a great deal.

I admit that San Diego doesn't make sense for many people. And the weather will only take you so far. But I could probably write a long diatribe about any city in the world.

That was quite an entertaining read though.

Exactly what I was thinking......gee, move to party central then b**** about all the drugs, drunks and partying....doh.

That is absolutely WONDERFUL. What a rhythmic and beautiful quote!

Ah, another Peter Noone fan :-)

(I wish the OP had devoted his considerable energy and creativity to saying something sensible.)

The original post was kinda entertaining in places, but I feel like I just wasted 15 minutes of my day reading it. At least I didn't miss out on any sunshine doing so..

Agreed....10 minutes of my day I'll never get back! Guy can write a "good story". Sounds like he will have some type of gripe no matter where he calls home.

Actually I think posts like this can really educate people. Especially people that are thinking about moving to San Diego. It can show you that you really need to do more due diligence before moving here.

I've lived in several cities including overseas. And hold permanent residency status in a few different countries. I've met a LOT of people like this OP that moved to a new city and they moved to the wrong area that wasn't appropriate for them. They didn't do a good enough job of picking the proper property/accommodations to stay at, and they didn't make any true friends.

You take this scenario and you apply it to any city and it can be a recipe for disaster.

Most major cities can be paradise if you plan it right or it can be hell just depending how you look at it. San Diego certainly isn't perfect and has it's share of problems just like most cities. However, if you can comfortably afford it, it's as close to Paradise as I've found and I've been to a lot of places. Or at least no one can argue with the fact that there are far far worse places to live in.
