So what is the point of a citizen owning an assault rifle? I'm all for gun ownership rights, but was the Constitution drafted with Uzis and AR-15s in mind?

People often claim that our forefathers we very bright people, but I'm sure they weren't any brighter than the politicians in office right now.

I totally agree. I usually never weigh in on gun ownership issues. And I do understand ownership rights and the 2nd Amendment. But I absolutely would have NO problems if they banned assault weapons like the AR-15.

I'm quite sure our Founding Fathers had no idea that weapons like this would be available.

Of course gun owners will argue that they need their AR-15s and other weapons like this. And they will go on to tell us how people can commit mass murders with knives/forks/spoons/etc if they wanted and it would be absolutely silly to ban knives/forks/spoons/etc. Yadda, yadda, yadda.

I completely agree with you. I am all for protecting your house and yourself with a pistol and hunting with regular rifles. I don't get why people want assault rifles that are capable of shooting dozens in minutes. I always say this and then pro gun people reply back about protecting themselves from the government nonsense. Honestly a lot of the conservatives I have met are really paranoid and seem to live in a constant state of fear. I've never touched a gun in my life and never plan on it.

The idea of having weapons protecting you from a tyrannical government did have some basis in reality during the 1700s.

It does not now.

Since the September 11 attacks, the government has been able to designate you a terrorist and kill you with no due process. That would be the very definition of a potentially tyrannical government -- the ability to deprive you of your life without due process. Fortunately, this power has not been abused.

But let's say the government was to abuse this power. And let's further say that you owned a, I dunna, fully functioning M1 tank.

Would you even see the drone strike that took out your tank?

As the Supreme Court said in Heller, there are limits to the right to own weapons. Is it constitutional to draw the line at military weapons that are designed for the battlefield?

That's something five Justices will have to decide.

Exactly. Furthermore, many of these people that pound the table the hardest on why they "need" guns have no idea just how great the USA is. Heck, I'd venture to bet that many of them have not been outside of the USA before. Try living abroad or even traveling abroad to know just how wonderful we have it here in the USA.

You always hear from these people how the USA is this horrible place where the government is ruining everything. I'd love for these people to be forced to live abroad in various countries to appreciate just how good they have it here.

To me, owning a firearm is just fine. You don't have to demonstrate a need for one, just wanting one is enough. Some of us enjoy owning firearms, some of us enjoy having fish tanks, some of us like organic food. And we should be able to own those things without people judging us.

But I think everyone can agree that there are some weapons that do not belong in civilian hands. When Generals Powell and McChrystal say they do not want military weapons in the hands of civilians, I listen. These guys know.

It's interesting that so many people pounding the table talking about their right to own firearms clearly have not read the Heller decision which established the individual right to own firearms.

If they had, they would know that the Supreme Court said things like it's definitely constitutional to restrict weapons around places like schools and that the right to own weapons does not extend to all weapons at all times.

I would agree that people should not be able to buy and use a machine gun without a permit. But, an Uzi is a full auto weapon(machine gun) while an Armalite model 15 a.k., AR-15 is copied to look like a selective fire military weapon(M-16) and fires a .223 round. Not even the same as 5.56 NATO hardball round created for the military.

Which means, it isn't a machine gun. Any one of my hunting rifles is more lethal and powerful than the .223 no matter what weapon is used to fire it. The .223 isn't even legal to hunt big game with in most States.

Personally, I think the AR-15 is a rather useless gun unless you hunt Coyotes but a lot of folks prefer them at the range. Now the AR-10 I like because it's the .308. You can hunt big game with that one.
